Pharrell Williams Halts Production on His Musical Biopic “Golden”
Pharrell Williams has decided to halt the release of his upcoming musical biopic titled Golden, as reported by Variety. The film, which was being directed by Michel Gondry and scheduled for a May 5 release, will not be proceeding as planned. The decision comes after Williams and Gondry concluded that they could not move forward with the original vision they had for the story. In a joint statement, they expressed their gratitude towards the cast and crew for their dedication and hard work. Despite their disappointment over not being able to present the film, they acknowledged their strong relationship with Universal and hinted at future collaborations in other forms.
The movie Golden had completed filming and featured an impressive lineup of talent, including Halle Bailey, Missy Elliott, Janelle Monáe, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Anderson .Paak, and Quinta Brunson. The narrative, set against the backdrop of Williams’ early years in Virginia Beach during the 1970s, aimed to celebrate African American culture and joy. In a 2024 interview, Williams described the project as a tribute to Black life, culture, and, most importantly, Black joy.
Universal Pictures, which was backing Golden, is expected to cover around $20 million in production expenses that were incurred. Previously, Focus Features, a sibling company of Universal, released Piece by Piece, a unique quasi-documentary on Pharrell Williams using Lego minifigures to depict various phases of his life.
