Sasha Opens Up About His Past Struggles With Anxiety Attacks

Veteran DJ/producer Sasha is an absolute legend and there’s no denying that fact. Considered as one of the most important names in dance music, the Welsh artist is responsible for helping the scene thrive and taste groundbreaking success, who himself has been at the forefront of the industry for nearly three decades now.

Although, being one of the poster boys of the electronic music generation during the early 90s, Sasha recently talked to The Guardian during a recent interview about how the limelight made him suffer from anxiety attacks.

“It was right at the peak of my rise to fame. I just couldn’t cope with it. I couldn’t cope with everyone knowing me, I couldn’t cope with the lifestyle – it was mad. Music would trigger them off. I thought I was losing my mind. The more intense the music, the more intense the anxiety got. It was quite a hard period of time: I was in the DJ booth with thousands of people in front of me going crazy but I was thinking I was losing the plot.”

Unlike recent times, when discussion on mental health in the music industry, Sasha also explained how “there was no reference point about this kind of thing,” during his days.

“I had no idea what was happening to me, and I didn’t know who to talk to. It wasn’t until a friend of mine explained to me what had happened to him – because he’d been off work for about three months – and I was like: ‘Oh my God, I’m having the same thing.’ I went to a doctor and started talking [about it]. I found that I was able to deal with it and I haven’t had one for a long time.”

A grave issue that has affected the likes of industry stalwarts like Benga, Nicky Romero and even forcing Avicii to retire, Sasha‘s situation doesn’t really come as a surprise considering how he was and still is considered as one of electronic music’s biggest names till date.
