Hailing from Caserta in the Campania region of Italy, Luigi Madonna is currently one of the hottest names in the dance music world. The musical genius who started out playing at various clubs in and around his district has come a long way to mark himself as a worthy successor to techno greats like Dave Clarke, Rino Cerrone, Richie Hawtin, and Adam Beyer.
For Madonna, it all started during his early teenage years as a hobby when he began spinning records in his home garage owing to his fondness over entertaining and groovy electronic music. What followed was his first major club gig booking at the highly reputed Imperio II club in Licola, Naples at the mere age of 14.
The musical journey of the young talent started taking shape as he slowly built a profound sense for new rhythms and sounds of intriguing complexity. 2006 was a landmark year for the young Italian who took a turn to minimal techno and ultimately started to mold his sound. Fast track to 2008, Luigi released two back to back EPs In Love and Sub Marine on Simplex Records and Structure Muzik respectively. But it was his highly rated Madonna EP on Rino Cerrone’s influential label Loose Records which shot him to fame. His success story went on to become even sweeter as he followed it up with some top notch releases on Drumcode and Analytic Trail.
Making a comeback on Loose Records with his Enigma EP, 2011 became one of the notable years in his timeline as he delivered a classic single “7 Swords” which featured on Drumcode’s “The Napoli Connection” compilation. Luigi showed no signs of stopping as he went on to deliver some seminal techno tracks “Smoke City” and “Last Enemy” which were a part of the Untitled compilation alongside Alberto Pascual on the reputed Material Series label. But the real icing on the cake was his massive Sensation EP later that year on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva’s Plus 8 Records.
2012 proved to be no different as he showcased his A-game with well received EPs Through The Tunnel and In The Box on Excentric Muzik and a powerful Venus De Milo EP in collaboration with Octopus Records founder Sian aka Graham Goodwin.
Luigi Madonna had indeed special plans for 2013 as he released a stunning collaborative EP Somewhere In Berlin with Alberto Pascual and a couple of solo EPs Primo on Drumcode and New World on Analytic Trail. New World will always remain special due to its stunning rework by none other than Madonna’s mentor and techno stalwart Joseph Capriati.
Not just limiting himself to originals, he has also created some stunning remixes of tracks over the years like “Clash” by Mauro Picotto & Riccardo Ferri, “I Need You” by Mark Reeves and Enrico Sangiuliano & Matt Sassari’s “Aries” to name a few and his legendary rework of Joseph Capriati’s “Basic Elements” which still manages to send the crowd into a frenzy. A regular on the renowned Awakenings’ roster, Luigi is a popular name in some of the best clubs around the world having created enough buzz in the music industry with his passion for experimental and unpredictable sounds paving the way.
The past two years have been significant for the Italian by putting out tracks on Drumcode, especially his Magic Land and Background EPs and on Unrilis and Sleaze as well. Moreover, he has made numerous appearances on several compilations by Analytic Trail and Loose Records in recent times. As 2016 begins to unfold, Luigi has already delivered a sublime remix for Secluded’s track “Round 12” which has been released as a part of Sleaze Records’ Sleaze Remix Project.
