If producers were to be ranked in terms of their creativity quotient, the top spot is bound to be Skrillex‘s well deserved place. 2015 has seen a whole new brand of Skrillex and has become the guy who has invaded uncharted territories, be it experimenting with his own sound or collaborating with artists from an extensive pool of genres. The guy just doesn’t shy away from the whole term of “new” and “experimentation”. As you might be aware, this past Christmas weekend, Sonny released a touching remix of his track “Stranger” from his 2014 album Recess. Getting hold of artists Tennyson and White Seas for the latest rendition, the piano ballad showcased a complete new side to his persona. Talking to The Creators Project, the OWSLA boss shed light on some unknown facts about the track and the music video.
The music video sees Skrillex and the collaborators light up fireworks with a group of teenagers from a local school in Griffen, Georgia where the video was shot and talking about the design, he said, “It’s very inspired by movies like Hook and Peter Pan. I thought it was really appropriate for the song.”
Throwing light about the introspective and calm nature of the track, Sonny explained,
“My mom had passed away earlier this year right in the middle of us finishing the edit.”
“‘Stranger’ kind of fell on the backburner for a while, and obviously this song was older so I just felt like I should rework it. This was actually only like a month ago. Why don’t I just flip the song into something else so it doesn’t feel irrelevant?”
Talking about the creative process of the video as to how his explanation to the kids go, something extremely profound came out of him,
“The meaning of this video was being in this world where you’re a stranger. Everyone’s a stranger, and names don’t matter, and being a stranger disintegrates walls and you get to have a true human interaction. It’s the hardest thing to keep when you get older, that child inside of you that’s so free and has no filter. That’s what makes it so real. It’s very inspired by movies like Hook and Peter Pan. I thought it was really appropriate for the song.”
According to Skrillex, the music plus the motion picture for the same went on hold due to the unfortunate passing away of his mother and death as we know it, did have an impact on him with his emotional availability. Come this Christmas, he has been able to take that energy and turn it into something even more special. Rightfully so, Skrillex has released his latest offering as a Christmas gift with an encouragement for the fans to donate to the Boys and Girls Club, Bridges for Music, or Jhamtse Gatsa Children’s Community as part of his label OWSLA‘s Nestivus campaign.
