Dutch wonder kid Martin Garrix has come a long way since “Animals” introduced him to stardom. Fast forward to 2015 and 3 years later he truly has become a young icon in every sense. With several global hits under his name, Martin is the future of electronic music. Recently during an interview with Dutch YouTube channel FaceCulture at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event, Garrix provided insight on a number of topics including his new studio, production time, his fallout with Spinnin’ Records and more.
The interview starts off with him talking about his new studio which was a work in progress back then during that time. Also tagging himself as a bedroom producer now as well, it seems he would never let go of it. He also talked about he has so much unfinished musical ideas with him and never gets to finish them.
” The thing is I make so many ideas, but when I’m stuck on one I make a new one, and then I make a new one and end up with like 30 unfinished songs! My management will tell me ‘Hey Martin, would you mind finishing one of those 30 ideas?!’ But I guess that’s every producer’s problem!”
As far as his collaboration with Avicii, “Waiting For Love” was concerned, it was rather a quick affair as they were messing around in the latter’s studio and completed it in a rather short span. He also dished out the story behind his breakout hit “Animals“.
“Animals was an idea that I did four years ago, so right now six years ago. It was just like the break melody and super shitty sounds, but the melody was very strong. It was like ‘oh this melody is very strong, I should totally use this melody and put it in a new shape’ and so I did the song around it.”
Discussing about the amount of pressure he faces due to high expectations, he admits that his landmark set at Ultra Miami earlier this year toned it down to quite an extent. “There’s no pressure at all now, I get into the studio now and I can be myself that’s the best feeling ever.”
When asked about the creative freedom he gets now (certainly pointing towards his split with former label), he explained about it in detail.
“I have no bad words to say about anybody who works at the music side of Spinnin’. It was mainly the contracts which got us stuck and was the reason of our split. Musicwise, the people who are there are in it for the music and I always had 100% freedom to do what I wanted to do and try what I was feeling…I think every producer should not stay in a box and get to do what they feel like.”
He also reflected upon his own creative space that has evolved over the years and become more melodic pertaining to the fact that the electronic music industry has become much more global in terms of audience and music. Also talking about the DJ MAG rankings, he was thankful to Hardwell for the support when the Revealed Recordings boss told that the next year’s edition should see the young producer ranked #1.
