Recently, the world’s largest musical catalog MusixMatch carried out an interesting study to find out the most popular genres of music in terms of followers and their lyrical prowess and primarily figuring out the vocabulary size of musicians. The researchers narrowed down a massive amount of genres into 8 of the most listened to ones which included 51 of their most popular artists and was chosen through top Google searches. Interestingly, the vocabularies were compared across 100 of their most densest songs and the results were calculated on basis of the number of unique words which appeared per 10,000. Finally, the artists and ultimately the genre of music they represented were ranked on the basis of average number of Spotify followers.
Undoubtedly, Hip-Hop music took home the first position in terms of having the most eloquent vocabulary and were adjudged third in the list of followers. The stats for heavy metal don’t create the perfect picture as they hit second place in terms of complexity of lyrics but had a seriously low amount of followers. Finally, the fact which can be very well taken for granted is that electronic music ranked at the bottom for their vocabulary use but had a massive amount of following and secured the second position trailing Pop music on the Spotify Followers’ list. You can check out the stats below.
