The news that is all over the airwaves, that 41-year-old DJ & Talent scout Zane Lowe is finally ending his tenure at his legendary outpost at BBC Radio One. The New Zealand based DJ and highly-acclaimed Radio show host will play his final show on March 5, before he departs to the USA to take up an unknown position at Apple. The move has garnered mixed reactions from the music industry, with most of the industry’s elite citing concerns over Apple‘s tightening grip over the music record business.
The big move, comes at a time when Apple is said to be in talks with Beats, the streaming service set up by Dr Dre, which the company bought last year for $3bn (£1.9bn), to develop a new music streaming service that will compete with Spotify. While talks are still being conducted over various outcomes of what Apple may have in mind, its clear that they will look to incorporate the various Beats services into their agenda, which will seemingly dictate a huge chunk of traffic and revenue. Meanwhile, with the departure of Lowe, BBC quickly announced that Annie Mac, who is currently a presenter on Radio 1‘s dance music programme, will be taking over the highly coveted 7pm-9pm weekday slot. Lowe was indeed emotional over his departure from the coveted post, as he enters this new exciting chapter in his life. Here’s what he had to say.
I want to thank everyone at Radio 1 for their support and friendship. The station has allowed me to share incredible music with the country’s best music fans. I’ve loved every minute of it. Exciting times ahead.
