In a move that might jeopardize the potential growth of upcoming artists and musicians, Facebook is doing away with its “Like to Download” policy. Over the years, a lot of musicians have employed the strategy of providing free downloads to fans by asking them to like their official pages. This helped them interact with their fans as well as inform them about their upcoming new material and tour dates.

The new policy from Facebook states:

You must not incentivise people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivise people to login to your app, check-in at a place or enter a promotion on your app’s Page. To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.

This change of policy won’t affect the already established musicians, as most of them use paid Sponsored Posts to ensure that their posts reach a majority of their fans. However, it would largely affect the upcoming artists as it would prevent them from reaching out to their potential fan base.

The new policy update will come into effect from November 5, 2014.
