Ravers in Ibiza are being sold a relatively new drug, called Methylenedioxypyrovalerone or MDPV.

The drug, which is meant to invoke a heightened sense of euphoria, an increased sense of energy and motivation, and an increase in mental stimulation and concentration amongst other effects, has been responsible for many of its users to be hospitalized post its consumption. The EDM community has been under fire for increased drug related deaths, and the addition of MDPV into the foray can only result in more backlash.

According to reports, patients suffering from side effects of the drug have had to be restrained in their beds, with some cases being so severe that in one, several policemen had to hold down a single male patient, resulting in a bite on a police officers hand.

Commonly referred to as “bath salts” by the media, the drug is considered to be a designer drug, with its known side effects to be paranoia, intense, prolonged panic attacks and violent behaviour.

Being in its introductory phase on the island, the police believe that drug dealers are testing the waters with the drug, hoping that the small batch that was introduced, has now been consumed. They also believe that the drug was being sold at various tourist hotspots in Spain, as a British tourist had to be admitted from side effects from MDPV in Mallorca.
