The Grammys have always stood as one of the monumental awards for the recognition of the best music in the industry. Genres like EDM have long been trying to carve a niche of their own in these award criteria and with the most recent amendments made in their rules during the recording academy’s Board of Trustees annual meeting, one can see that they have come a long way.
The rules have now been revised and the most favourable one is the allowance of samples to be used in all songwriting categories. Formerly, if samples/snippets of pre-recorded compositions or already existing tracks were borrowed and incorporated for a new piece of work, that particular piece would not have been eligible for all award categories. Sampling was only acceptable for the “Best Rap Song” category, where as works of electronic music which, as we know, constantly involves interpolation and re-interpretation would not get the recognition it deserved; but with the latest amendment, electronic music can stretch out into broader categories. This is definitely an encouraging step which will make the award ceremony of 2015 one to look forward to!
