Danish science demonstrators Fysikshow have created a unique and innovative Pyro Board that is surely one of the coolest experiments between science and music! The board, is inspired from the Ruben’s tube – a more simple row of flames that reflects standing sound waves. With over 2,500 holes for bunsen burners, the 2D board literally shapes and shifts based on the sounds and wavelengths of emitted sounds.
Sune Nielsen, a member of Fysikshow, spoke to science blogger Derek Muller when he visited the scientists in Denmark to find out how the borad works. On the Pyro Board, nodes and antinodes of sound waves create different levels of flame across the board, while every bass note lights a crazy ball of fire in the middle. Turning up the volume results in higher, brighter fire. Seeing this illustration, one can only imagine the prospects of seeing this board live in concert, creating a new development in pyrotechnics and electronic music.
