Since his move from Mumbai to Los Angeles in 2013, B.R.E.E.D has not only grabbed hold of the west coast ‘Glitch’ sound, but has also extended his influence on it and created something new. The 2 time Indian DMC champ (under the name DJ Nasha) has also released music on Muti Music / Ministry of Sound / Jack Knife / Top Billin / High Chai / Foreign Familiar.
Speaking about the album the talented producer said, “Binate means ‘yolked together’ and a coming of the soul with the digital side. As you will hear, a lot of the tracks have soulful vocal tracks laced with piano and strings but also have that funk-hop, low-end element to it”.
Although B.R.E.E.D has been mainly likened to be a ‘drumstep’ producer, his latest release features only one drumstep track and has more ‘funk-hop’ to offer. The album opens with the track, “Stuck In A Dream” and is without a doubt one of the tastiest treats on the album, kicking off with a stunning piano line, only to swiftly pull the rug from beneath your feet & begin the assault with some mind boggling percussive sounds and bass.
The next track, “Tears” transitions smoothly and appropriately with the vibe which has been set. After a heavy hitting start, this tune turns more downtempo but doesn’t lose its complexity. Changing the pitch to a violin sample goes on to create a beautiful melody that works its way up to a robust beat section of thumping bass and drums.
The two tracks which follow next mark a clear divergence in style and rhythm. Titled, “Stay” and “Acidate” respectively, they meander away from heavy hitting dubstep, to a more high tempo trap-esq sound which builds up to present “Intergalactic Funk” which is as B.R.E.E.D puts it pure ‘funk-hop’. A short, yet sweet fusion of funky bass-lines with futuristic dub elements leaves you wanting more as the track transitions seamlessly into the title track “Binate” which is a spectacular, mellow, glitch tune which is accompanied by ingenious use of percussive samples and vocal elements.
Moving ahead, “Trip Biscuit” is reminiscent of classic dubstep with a tinge of modern adaptation. The buzzing and oscillating bass-line and the noteworthy vocal samples add dimension to the track. “Bass Gash” suits it’s title perfectly, bringing forth a sound which could be compared to the sound of the universe wailing and screaming as the fabric of time space is being ripped open. The composition of the track certainly breaks the mould as it layers a complex array of synth lines, effects and is bound to tease your ear owing largely to its sudden stops providing a perfect way to mark the climax of B.R.E.E.D’s story. Finally, “Just A Feeling” outstandingly concludes the album with a slow, macabre tune.
B.R.E.E.D is certainly a specimen of his own and his up bringing in India has surely generated a unique blend of culture and flavour. No wonder Muti Music has picked up his release and is supporting B.R.E.E.D in his journey to sequester ears nationwide.
A natural taste maker, riding the cusp of contemporary influence and fusing well established genres to evolve the auditory status quo, “Binate” is a splendid piece of work by B.R.E.E.D!
