Energetic young-gun, remix maestro, house music magician. To those in the know, Dyro is one of Holland’s future megastars, the crown prince of the global electronic music scene. At the tender age of 20, he already has a near-psychic ability to know what will make an audience explode. Merging huge progressive house with bone-crunching electro drops, he conjures an orgasmic peak-time sound that demands an explosive reaction and will soon be known as the fierce ‘Dyro sound’. With a rapidly growing following across the world, the road ahead looks clear indeed for this bright young star from Leiden.
We had the pleasure of interviewing the talented DJ/Producer during the recently concluded Tomorrowland festival this year. Hit past the break to know what the young ace had to tell us about his relationship with Hardwell, his first ever gig, his desire to tour India & more at Tomorrowland 2013!
TBB: We’re here at Tomorrowland 2013, and are sitting with none other than the most promising talent of the year, DJ Dyro! Firstly, how are you?
Dyro: Hey! Im very good, Thank you
TBB: You just finished your set a few moments ago; it was absolutely packed with energy! How does it feel to be here at the biggest music festival in the world?
Dyro: Well its obviously very special to be here at Tomorrowland, although its only an hours drive from my house! It’s really cool because it’s a completely different world here but then again, so close!
TBB: Diving back into the past, tell us about how you stared your career in music.
Dyro: I started listening to electronic music when I was 15-16 years old. When I got to know that you could make music from the computer, it really fascinated me and I had to give it a shot. At first it was just a hobby for me and I was making it for fun, but then when I went to high school I had more time and that’s when I really started getting into it.
TBB: Did you start as a producer or a DJ?
Dyro: I was actually more of a studio producer than a DJ. I always knew about DJ’ing, what the concept was, how to go about it and all, because I was making music. I kept making more and more music, and kept putting it out on SoundCloud. One thing led to another and then Hardwell played my song in his set at E-Zoo in 2012, and that’s when we contacted each other. Funny thing is, that the first message he ever sent me was in English because he didn’t know I was from the Netherlands, as well! So Yeah! Everything went really great after I released music, eventually people wanted me to start DJing at their parties and so on.
TBB: So how did your moniker ‘Dyro’ come about?
Dyro: Well my real name is Jordy and if you re arrange the letters and remove the J, you get Dyro. I always wanted it to be something with my own name, rather than some weirdass made up name!
TBB: Where did you play your first gig?
Dyro: Umm… Well my first gig was in Miami at the WMC and it was a Revealed label night. Goes down as one of the most special memories I have from when I started my career.
TBB: You’ve been an active part of online dance music communities, what do you think about the production culture online and how important is it?
Dyro: I think its really important to be on such forums. I’m actually very disappointed because I haven’t been on these lately. Its really getting to me how busy my schedule is with touring and production, I hardly get time! But obviously if I do I will definitely get back on it. For producers it’s absolutely essential to be able to communicate with each other and form means of talking and helping each other out.
TBB: What do you think is the best way for upcoming producers to ‘make’ it now days?
Dyro: Personally I think to make it, its about making good music and putting it out there. Demos hardly make it now because there are so many good producers! The way to go about it, is to make good music, spread it amongst your friends, and allow it to go viral. Its important to impress the DJ’s first and the labels after.
TBB: Was it important for you as a producer to have the right name before actually making it big?
Dyro: Well yeah totally! I came up with the name while I was producing 3 years ago, that’s when I actually got into it. Around then, I wasn’t really putting my music online, and I knew my name was going to be Dyro. More importantly, I didn’t want to have a false start with bad music, so I made it a point to release my stuff only when I felt it was really good. That kept me going, and I was always making music; throwing it away or keeping it for later. Basically making new beats and then once it was good I’d put it online.
TBB: Could you tell us a little about your relationship with Hardwell?
Dyro: Hardwell and I, first met at a Revealed label night. And we hit it off from day 1 itself! He’s been a hero for me, an inspiration and a role model in music. As a person hes super cool and I personally see Hardwell & Robert as two separate people. We toured together this year and most recently we even did a song together. There’s so much I’ve learn from him, and we’ve had some great times together! Its always so much fun around him.
TBB: Your collaboration with Hardwell ‘Never Say Goodbye’ soared to the top of the Beatport & various other charts. How & when did you two decide to make a track together?
Dyro: Hardwell and I always knew we were going to make a track together. Ever since I started working with Revealed, he told me we would choose the right moment. We exchanged many ideas, and kept shooting projects to each other; but around the latter bit of 2012 he called me, and told me that he really liked a recent remix I had made & suggested we make a track on similar ground. That’s pretty much how the whole thing began. The instrumental version was finished before we went for the Canadian bus tour. Soon after, Heather sent us an amazing vocal layer and we knew that was it! And the first time it was ever premiered was at Ultra Music Festival in Miami this year, in front of thousands of fans and boy… It was huge!
TBB: Talking about your music, what can we expect from you in the future?
Dyro: Well I’ve just finished off a couple of mixes for Benny Bennasi , Axwell, David Guetta, Rihanna, etc and I’m soon releasing an original track on Nicky Romero’s label. Although I have a lot of new songs that I will add to my sets, but people wont know just yet.
TBB: As we’re ‘The Bangin Beats’, here’s our standard favourite. Tell us your top 3 #bangin tracks?
Dyro: My top 3 #bangin tracks! I really like the new Showtek track ‘Booyah’, my upcoming release on Nicky’s label and Hardwell & W&W’s new track ‘Jumper’!
TBB: Finishing off, do you have a message for your fans in India?
Dyro: India. WOW! I get so many tweets and so much support from India its just overwhelming. I don’t have anything planned yet, but I definitely cannot wait and I’m always open to touring. It will be absolutely amazing & I’m excited to come to India at least once in my career.
TBB: Thanks Jordy! Its been a pleasure.
