Read ahead to know what this young prodigy had to tell us about his music career, his relationship with Sander van Doorn & his funny initial experience with Spinnin’ Records and his upcoming collaborations & releases and more!
TBB: First of all, Welcome to India! It’s your first time here?
Julian: Yes and I’m loving it here. The crowd has been really amazing.
TBB: Being very young how did your family cope up with your music career?
Julian: They are very supportive. At first I was making music for fun and my parents didn’t think I was seriously releasing stuff. When I got signed to Spinnin’ Records, my parents realized that this is serious and after that they have kept supporting me and they’re in fact my biggest fans.
TBB: How did your DJing career start? We heard you played your first set in High School, did that kick start your passion or you were always into it then?
Julian: I was always into it but I never played a gig until then. I wanted to do something with DJing and producing. So, I was making my own tracks then and wanted to play them in front of the school. They really liked it and gave me the vibe to produce more and continue what I’m doing.
TBB: Were you a DJ first or a producer?
Julian: I was first a DJ after that I became a producer because I wanted to play my own tracks. I was missing something when I was playing. There’s nothing better than play your own tracks and see the crowd respond to them.
TBB: How old were you when you first starting mixing or producing tracks?
Julian: I was 12 when I first discovered Virtual DJ and was making mixtapes etc. with it at that time. Then my dad introduced me to FL Studio as the software with which one can produce their own music. Then I tried that but it sounded shit in the beginning (laughs). It took me almost 1 year to understand the software and it is still a learning process.
TBB: Is it safe to say that Sander van Doorn played a major role in shaping your career? How did he first listen to your tracks and how was your association with him at the start?
Julian: Yes, he did. I was sending out demos to various labels in the beginning and then I got a response from Spinnin’ Records, which I thought was the real Spinnin’ but it turned out to be a hacker. I mailed him the .wav file of my track and then they released on some other label under some other artists name. Then, I reached out to Dutch media who covered my story and Spinnin’ Records saw my side of the story in media and contacted me to sign with ‘the real Spinnin’. Sander is also at Spinnin’ Records and the label sent out demos of my track to Sander and he really liked my tracks and asked me for a collaboration or something.
TBB: So, Sander van Doorn contacted you first? How was the feeling when that happened?
Julian: At first I thought it was a joke. I only had one release and then Sander van Doorn came to me. So, I was really happy!
TBB: You already have two Beatport charting tracks like “BFAM” and “Kangaroo”. How does it feel to have achieved that at such a young age?
Julian: It feels very good when you see your own track between people who are 20-30 years old and I’m like just 17 (laughs). Well it’s a pretty amazing feeling that you already have so many years to continue and you are already charting. Its awesome!
TBB: So, you started your Radio show ‘Rock Steady’ recently, can you tell us a bit about that?
Julian: Spinnin’ Records came to me and my management with the idea of doing a radio show. To promote new talent, play new tracks from myself and other artists, play the tracks I like and let people know what my taste is. I really liked the idea and said ‘Let’s do this’.
TBB: Talking a bit about the future, where do you see yourself headed in 5 years from now?
Julian: Funny thing is I don’t really like to talk about the future. Anything could happen! When I look back to a year ago, I didn’t think I would be playing in India this year. I really don’t know what’s gonna happen in future.
TBB: Any upcoming collaborations in the pipeline?
Julian: Yeah, I got a new track coming out with TV Noise. I already have collaborated with them once, but there’s another new one coming out soon. I really like that track and Spinnin’ Records even like it and they’ve been supporting me a lot.
TBB: Tell us a bit about your Production set-up? How has it evolved since your father introduced you to FL Studio first?
Julian: I’m still using FL Studio and learning Logic right now. I started with PC speakers and made my first track “Rock Steady” on those speakers. Then I bought some better monitor speakers KRKs RP6. They were pretty good but I searched for something better. So, now I got Dynaudio DBM50 and they’re pretty awesome.
TBB: So, it’s all digital when it comes to synths and everything? Which is your favorite VST/Plugin?
Julian: Yes, still all digital. My favorite plugin is Massive, I really love it because you can make everything with it. I really love Izotope Ozone too, for mastering and mixing.
TBB: Any message for your fans out there in India?
Julian: I was really amazed with the crowd here in India and loved the energy people gave me. They really showed me that they love dance music!
TBB: Thank you so much for talking to us, hope you come to India again.
