Death Stranding Movie Could Have Been Directed By Kojima Himself

Michael Sarnoski to Direct Live-Action Death Stranding Film

Michael Sarnoski has been confirmed as the director for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Death Stranding, although initial considerations for the role were quite different. In a recent discussion with The New Yorker, Noah Sacco, who leads A24’s film division, revealed that he initially proposed the directing role to Hideo Kojima, the creator and mastermind behind the original game.

Sacco recounted asking Kojima, “Are you sure you don’t want to direct?” It remains unclear what further discussions ensued or Kojima’s response to the proposition. Nevertheless, Kojima ultimately did not take on the directing role for the film.

Sarnoski, who previously directed the critically acclaimed film Pig starring Nicolas Cage, and the upcoming 2024 movie A Quiet Place: Day One, is not only directing Death Stranding but also taking on the role of writer for the film. Additionally, he is set to direct The Death of Robin Hood, featuring Hugh Jackman in the titular role.

Although Kojima is not involved in writing or directing the Death Stranding film, his company, Kojima Productions, is listed as a producer. Kojima has indicated that the movie will not be a straightforward conversion of the game but will instead aim to captivate both the gaming audience and film enthusiasts alike.

Current Status and Future Plans for the Death Stranding Movie

The project is still in the early stages, with no confirmed cast or release date yet announced. Norman Reedus, who portrayed the main character Sam in the Death Stranding video games, has expressed his willingness to reprise his role in the movie adaptation. An animated Death Stranding movie is also reportedly in development, expanding the broader universe of the game.

Regarding the gaming side, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was released in June. While Kojima harbors ideas for a third installment, he does not plan to lead its development personally. His current projects include working on games titled OD and Physint.

Other Projects Under A24 and Exciting Developments

A24 is also involved in the production of an Elden Ring movie, directed by Alex Garland, an Oscar-nominated filmmaker. Sacco shared that Garland approached him with a comprehensive vision for the film, presenting a 160-page script draft and an additional 40 pages of related imagery. When approached to direct, Garland’s response was enthusiastic, simply stating, “F**k yeah.”
