Death Stranding Movie Will 'Tell a Story You Haven't Seen in That World,' Director Confirms

Hideo Kojima, alongside director Michael Sarnoski, has announced that the upcoming Death Stranding movie by A24 will feature an original storyline, diverging from the narrative of the video games.

During the Kojima Productions 10th Anniversary Livestream, the duo shared insights into the live-action adaptation, marking the first occasion they’ve disclosed story details since the film’s initial announcement.

“Our aim with this film is to embody the essence and overarching themes of the game while introducing a narrative and characters previously unexplored within this setting,” explained Sarnoski. “We’re committed to doing justice to the original on both a grand and intimate scale, capturing the expansive environments and the complex personalities within them.”

Kojima revealed during the event that adapting the expansive story of Death Stranding into a two-hour film format was a challenge, prompting the need for a director who could also handle scriptwriting duties to create a unique expression within the established universe.

“We’re exploring a distinct narrative within the same universe that will be approachable for newcomers and rewarding for fans familiar with the games,” Sarnoski elaborated. “The goal is to craft a human story that captures the core of what makes this world captivating, standing independently yet true to its origins.”

Meeting Kojima-san and discussing the project with A24 made me realize the creative freedom I was given.

While Sarnoski’s comments don’t explicitly rule out appearances from characters like Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus), Fragile (Léa Seydoux), or Mama (Margaret Qualley), fans may need to temper their expectations regarding cameo appearances by the original game’s cast.

The Death Stranding film project was unveiled by Kojima Productions and A24 in 2023. Although Kojima himself is not directing, he emphasized his deep involvement in the film’s development. Michael Sarnoski, known for his work on A Quiet Place: Day One and Pig, was chosen to helm the project.

“The prospect of taking on such a significant project was daunting, especially following my experience with A Quiet Place,” said Sarnoski. “However, after my discussions with Kojima-san and A24, it became clear how much creative leeway I was allowed. Kojima-san is a genuine supporter of other artists, encouraging me to fully engage with and contribute to this world.”

Currently, there is no confirmed release date for Kojima, Sarnoski, and A24’s live-action adaptation of Death Stranding. Keep an eye on updates and check out the highlights from the Kojima Productions 10th Anniversary Livestream, including a sneak peek at the Death Stranding animated movie.
