Hideo Kojima Reveals First Trailer for Xbox Game Studios Title OD

During a recent livestream titled Kojima Productions: Beyond the Strand, Hideo Kojima unveiled the debut trailer for his new game OD, a project developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios.

The game, which was previously introduced without many details, will feature actors Sophia Lillis from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Udo Kier from Hunters, and Hunter Schafer from Euphoria. The trailer released today highlighted Sophia Lillis’ character in a foreboding mansion setting, where she is seen lighting candles in the presence of a threatening entity.

Kojima took the opportunity on stage to clarify that the game’s full title is OD: Knock. Throughout the trailer, a disturbing sound of knocking plays a key role. This specific subtitle helps to distinguish this game from another project titled OD, which is being developed by filmmaker Jordan Peele. Kojima emphasized the unique element of terror in his game centered around the concept of knocking, expressing his personal fear of loud knocking noises.

The eerie trailer starts with the scene of Lillis’ character using a red card to unlock a similarly colored door. The storyline of OD is teased with text that is partially obscured, suggesting the events occur a decade after a chilling incident, and hinting at a resurgence of a curse.

The text on the red card reads, “Light the fires to celebrate their [redacted].” The scene shifts to a first-person view as Lillis’ character enters a dimly lit room, with rain beating against the windows. Inside, she finds a chest and begins to light an array of candles placed around it.

As she lights additional candles, some eerily shaped like the infant figures from Death Stranding, the camera finally focuses on Lillis’ terrified face. Sounds of a door opening and footsteps approaching can be heard, alongside an intensifying noise resembling a Geiger counter. The trailer climaxes with the shadowy figure seizing Lillis by the head.

It has been announced that the development of OD is utilizing Unreal Engine, with Xbox providing support to Kojima Productions in optimizing the technology.

Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Development is progressing well. Kojima is pushing boundaries in terms of gameplay, narrative, and engaging players. Our collaboration is intense, and we’re thrilled about what’s coming next.”

Spencer added, “The teaser is impressive—sinister yet distinctly Kojima-san. OD is ambitious and unique, a true testament to the distinctiveness of its creators. We’re fully backing the production, contributing both visually and behind the scenes. Our primary focus is to bring Kojima-san’s vision to life for gamers globally, and we eagerly anticipate its release.”

Further details about OD are still largely undisclosed, but Kojima has hinted at the game’s intense horror elements, jokingly warning that it might scare players tremendously.

Additionally, today’s livestream also touched upon the upcoming Death Stranding movie and introduced artwork and casting for another project, Physint. For more updates, check out our recap of everything announced at Hideo Kojima’s Beyond the Strand livestream.
