New styles for “M3GAN 2.0” draw inspiration from Farrah Fawcett and Judy Jetson.
The notorious doll returns with a new mission: to eliminate a dangerous robot named AMELIA (portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno), who poses a threat to human existence.
Jeriana San Juan, the film’s costume designer, was tasked with crafting distinct styles: M3GAN’s smart yet fierce look, alongside a deadly seductress ensemble for AMELIA.
San Juan explains, “AMELIA is designed to function with the efficiency of a soldier yet has to blend in like a civilian. At times, her role is to lure and neutralize through allure. This brought about the glamorous Farrah Fawcett influence in her appearance. I chose a palette of tactical, neutral tones for her, enabling her to blend into her surroundings more effectively.”
As the narrative unfolds, the dolls encounter each other in a series of futuristic and stylish outfits. At an AI convention, M3GAN, alongside Gemma (Allison Williams), Cady (Violet McGraw), Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez), and Tess (Jen Van Epps), confronts AMELIA while trying to stay under the radar in neon costumes. In a strategic move, M3GAN adopts the attire of one of the performers at the event, ultimately taking the stage to dance before an audience of tech leaders, setting her sights on AMELIA.
San Juan describes M3GAN’s battle gear as “entirely made of vacuum-molded tinted plastics. I proposed the concept of all robots appearing candy-colored to maintain a playful, doll-like notion of robotics. It’s a fusion of Gundam and Judy Jetson,” she remarks. “This was also influenced by my initial passionate experience with robotics via my 1990s transparent Game Boy.”
While M3GAN roams the cityscape in her robotic garb, it is disclosed that she has been covertly observing the inside of Gemma’s home through her non-physical form, analyzing the personal development of both Cady and Gemma since she was last with them. “Observing their growth inspired a more mature self-perception for M3GAN. I aimed to empower her and reflect her artistic and sartorial evolution,” San Juan notes. “In the first film, her purpose was to be a doll, a companion akin to an American Girl doll for Cady. This time, she’s evolved and has a greater stake in her own visual identity, which I refined into an image of a mod 1960s feminist, reminiscent of The Avengers style.”
