Rachel Zegler, who recently took on the role of Disney’s Snow White, has secured her next movie project following “Snow White.” She will portray the daughter of Marisa Tomei’s unrestrained character in the comedic drama “She Gets It From Me.”
Directed by Julia von Heinz, known for “Treasure” and the 2021 German Oscar contender “And Tomorrow the Entire World,” the film is kicking off its global pre-sales at the Cannes market, spearheaded by Embankment.
The plot of “She Gets It From Me” is inspired by real events and centers around Nicky (played by Zegler), whose party to celebrate her engagement unexpectedly turns into a quest to find her erratic, former punk rocker biological mother, Charlotte (played by Tomei). This quest sets the stage for a chaotic and heartfelt mother-daughter adventure aimed at rebuilding their bond.
The film explores the often untold stories of family reunions, delving into the complicated realities that unfold after the initial emotional encounter, a theme rarely captured on camera.
Produced by 3311 Productions in collaboration with Anna Werner of Seven Elephants and Jay Reiss, who also penned the screenplay, Embankment Films is managing international sales while CAA handles the U.S. rights.
Director Julia von Heinz expressed that the film’s emotional authenticity makes it a truly engaging and humorous cinematic experience. She praised Reiss’s script for its genuine portrayal of family interactions, which are depicted as both absurd and profound, chaotic yet significant.
Jen Dana of 3311 Productions complimented Rachel Zegler’s ability to bring a unique depth and realism to her roles, highlighting her enthusiasm about Zegler’s continued display of versatility and comedic talent in her acting career.
Zegler’s ascent in the film industry has been rapid since her notable performance in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of “West Side Story,” which earned her a Golden Globe. Her recent projects include “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and the upcoming “Evita” at the London Palladium.
Marisa Tomei, an Oscar winner and three-time nominee, continues to balance her career between independent films and major studio projects. She is recognized for her role as May Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her recent appearances in “She Came to Me” at the Berlinale and the Prime Video romantic comedy “Upgraded.”
