Daisy Edgar-Jones Says Male Co-Stars Glen Powell, Paul Mescal and Sebastian Stan Were Never Angry About Her Being Top Billed Over Them: ‘That’s Why They’re So Successful’

In a recent discussion with Elle Magazine, Daisy Edgar-Jones expressed gratitude that her prominent male co-stars have supported her in leading roles. Edgar-Jones rose to fame alongside Paul Mescal in “Normal People” and has since worked with notable actors such as Sebastian Stan in “Fresh,” Harris Dickinson in “Where the Crawdads Sing,” Glen Powell in “Twisters,” Andrew Garfield in “Under the Banner of Heaven,” and Jacob Elordi in “On Swift Horses.” She humorously noted that she has almost completed a roster of the internet’s most admired male stars, with only Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler remaining.

“I feel fortunate that each actor I’ve collaborated with has been incredibly supportive of my lead roles,” she remarked earnestly. “Glen, Sebastian, Paul—all of them. Their success and popularity stem from their generosity; they focus on enriching the story rather than themselves. Glen always inquired about Kate’s narrative in ‘Twisters,’ seeking to understand it fully. Similarly, Sebastian was deeply invested in exploring Noa’s story in ‘Fresh.’ Working with Paul felt like playing tennis with your best friend. I’m apprehensive about the day I might have to work with someone who isn’t as accommodating. The industry is often rife with ego.”

Harris Dickinson praised Edgar-Jones for her role on the set of “Where the Crawdads Sing,” telling Elle Magazine, “She’s incredibly kind and patient, qualities that not only make her a wonderful person but also a brilliant artist. Her sensitivity allows her to really connect with her characters.”

Edgar-Jones also commented on the evolving nature of female roles in cinema: “It’s heartening to see more narratives with women at the forefront. As a woman in her twenties, I’m keen on discovering roles that go beyond the typical ingenue. I strive to portray characters that are complex, deep, and layered—true reflections of human nature. I consider myself lucky that the roles I’ve played so far have embodied these qualities. They aren’t confined by their actions, experiences, or the men in their lives. For instance, Kate’s role in ‘Twisters’ was celebrated for her personal growth rather than a romantic subplot, which was a refreshing deviation from the norm.”

“On Swift Horses,” Edgar-Jones’ latest project, is set to premiere in theaters on April 25, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. For more about her insights and experiences, visit Elle’s website to read the full cover story.
