The underground dance music scene has come leaps and bounds in the last couple of years in the country, and the focal point for the entire movement has to be the artists we have today. One standout producer from the horde of artists in the country is Madhav Shorey aka Kohra. With his deep, hypnotic brand of techno that is immersive and an experience in its own, Kohra has made a name for himself through sheer hard work and dedication.
Having opened for deadmau5 in 2014, as well as playing at the Awakenings stage at Vh1 Supersonic in Decemeber, 2015, the Delhi based DJ and producer is all set to play at Budweiser MADE Stage‘s return, alongside Dualist Inquiry and Madboy/Mink.
We caught up with Madhav Shorey as part of our focus on Budweiser MADE Stage to discuss his record label Qilla, his journey as an artist and much more. Read on!
TBB: You are undoubtedly one of India’s hottest techno acts at the moment. How has the journey been so far?
Kohra: It’s been a long journey so far but somehow it seems like it’s only just begun. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and meet lots of people which is always inspiring. India’s also a great place to be in at the moment with the amount of things that are going on so I can’t really complain.
TBB: What’s going on at your label, Qilla Records at the moment? Any future projects inbound from your side?
Kohra: Qilla had taken a backseat for a few months since we were changing our back-end distributors but all that is now done and we’re re-starting our releases this month. We’ve got a few editions of Fotre, our mini electronica compilations and a bunch of EP’s scheduled to release. This year, we’re focusing on a few Indian and International producers only and trying to release a limited amount of good quality underground music. Our sound is also going a bit deeper and more melodic now, but always keeping in mind the eager listener on the dance floor.
TBB: As Budweiser Made Stage makes a return, how excited are you to be a part of the concept?
Kohra: It’s quite interesting for me since I haven’t played with a live music line-up in a while so it gives me a different context in terms of sound to work with.
TBB: The techno music scene in India has steadily risen up from the underground to become one of the more celebrated genres in the sub-continent at the moment. What’s your take on it?
Kohra: I think it’s got a lot to do with the number of Dj’s and Producers who have been playing quality music either traveling on in their own respective cities. It’s exposed the audience to a lot of fresh sounds and I feel that a lot of them are now “hooked” which is great. But, we still have a long way to go.
TBB: And finally, how does your special collaboration with Dualist Inquiry and Kohra for the Made Stage’s return fall in sync with Budweiser’s ‘Music Brewed The Hard Way’campaign?
Kohra: I think their concept is more about musicians trying to explore new spaces in music to create a unique and engaging experience.
Personally, I’m pretty happy with the fact that brands like Budweiser supporting alternative and underground music.
Catch Kohra live tonight at Todi Mill Social, Mumbai with Dualist Inquiry and Madboy/Mink. More details here!
