Ibiza Over The Years: An Evolution

Ibiza has always been one of the most essential destination in dance music since the 80’s. With names like Carl Cox, Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, and many more gracing the island, Ibiza has become a haven for fans of the diverse genres that come under the umbrella of dance music.

With an omnipresent vibrant scene before electronic music, with the likes of Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and many more ruling the roost, it was only a matter of time till dance music took over. During the 80’s, Amnesia’s resident DJ, DJ Alfredo Fiorito, helped pioneer the Balearic Sound that we’ve all come to know today.

When I arrived on the boat and first walked down the first street, I saw that everyone was free, hippy, and laid back. I thought to myself this is where I want to live” said DJ Alfredo Fiorito.

The flourishing scene in Ibiza attracted the attention of Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker, who came to Ibiza for the very first time in the summer of 1987. Inspired, they took back all that they saw, and started UK’s three groundbreaking clubs, Shroom, Spectrum and The Trip.

The 90’s saw an exponential growth in Ibiza’s ever growing influence, with house and trance making their presence felt at the island, with Carl Cox, Loco Dice, Sasha, Luciano, Pete Tong, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Sven Vath, Paul van Dyk, ATB,  and many more cementing their positions as legends.

With a complete domination of electronic music for more than a decade, the 2000’s saw rock music make a comeback in the island, with Ibiza Rocks, which saw acts such as Arctic Monkeys, The Stone Roses, and Florence & The Machine playing to huge crowds at the Ibiza Rock House.

In the last 5 years, Ibiza has seen a radical change in the shows hosted at the clubs in the island. Gone is the underground vibe that the island was known for. It has been replaced by shows with massive production, lasers, pyrotechnics, dancers, CO2 cannons and what not. Almost all the big names in the world of dance music have their own shows at Ibiza, from Armin van Buuren to Avicii, from David Guetta to Carl Cox, you name it, you’ve got it.
