Understanding “Groovy-Funky-Techno” With Ramiro Lopez
Spanish DJ & Producer extraordinaire, Ramiro Lopez, docks into Indian shores mid-week, as his unceasing extent of fans await his arrival with a slight bit of impatience! The iconic Suara roster export has made his name across the DJ fraternity with his out-of-the-box music re-portiere that features some stunning collaborations, remixes and original EPs. While we’re continually putting more focus on the powerhouse that is Ramiro Lopez, as he is also our Artist of The Month, we delve deeper into his sound style, trying to make sense of all the beauty in that seemingly intricate structure.
Toledo native Ramiro Lopez has over his career curated an impressive portfolio on imprints like Bedrock, Cecille, Noir, Terminal M, Tronic, SCI+TEC over the years, before settling into Coyu‘s iconic Suara imprint. He started off DJing as early as 1995, with Vinyls and continued to use the revered medium for a great part of his budding DJ career. It is this quality, of “touching the music“, so to speak, that has distilled into Lopez after all those years, as he attempts to recreate the authenticity of Techno magnolia with modern-day advancements. A wizard behind the decks, he curates his sets and sounds as a uniform journey that twists, turns and takes its listeners onto the euphoric before arriving into a blissful Techno utopia of groovy and funky flavors.
An ardent fan of Jazz and RnB, Lopez doesn’t step too far away from the sounds he’s inspired by. His Techno can be best described as “Groovy-Funky-Techno“, a genre he himself carries on his shoulders, unplagiarized by the commercial successes of his many contemporaries. In a career spanning nearly two decades as an artist, its surprising that it wasn’t till 2006 that he finally stepped into production. That gives us a Vinyl mastered DJ with an experience of over a decade, who knows the ticks and crosses of every dancefloor gathering, better than we know it ourselves.
A bit of a perfectionist, Lopez has gone on record to admit that he always feels he could alter something about a track a wee-bit, even after it has released. It just goes to show, how despite years of experience, he still hones his passion for dance music in a purely creative aesthetic. Another interesting aspect of his sound is his long list of collaborations he has made with artists from around the globe. Always infusing little elements from different cultures, Lopez brings in the joy of working with other producers through his productions, as is realized in his powerhouse productions. Interestingly, he’s a firm collaborator with India’s very own Arjun Vagale as well! Expect some mighty tunes to be dropped by this week when Lopez takes to the decks!
