35 Year old DJ, Music Producer, Promoter, Label Head, and now TV Producer, Wesley Pentz aka Diplo‘s recent interview with Billboard gave us insight into the rooted DJ’s humble and unique approach to music. From his preference of strip clubs as a place to unwind to what all he has in store for his fans, Diplo did not hesitate to talk about everything that constitutes this hit-making machine. He even talked about other DJs and wonders where the ingenuity and originality has disappeared under layers of similar, commercialized tracks. He admits being astounded by the unawareness of DJs of music outside the adrenalin-pumping cacoon of EDM they live within.
They don’t even care about the music anymore. It’s about the experience and hearing things that are really familiar and comfortable over and over again.
All the DJs were at my Vegas night one night — I’m not going to name names, but all the big EDM guys — and I played a Juicy J record…They’re like, ‘Where do you get these records?’ I’m like, ‘They’re on the radio! You can buy them off iTunes!’ They really have no idea. They live in these bubbles. I’m like, ‘Damn, dudes, use your imagination a little bit.
Despite working on mixes for Madonna, Usher and Lorde, the hard-working DJ-producer keeps his feet firmly on the ground.
A lot of DJs don’t realize they’re here today and gone tomorrow. They’re literally taking jets to every show. It’s crazy how much money they’re spending.
This DJ may have a whopping million followers on Twitter and Facebook but that doesn’t keep him from remembering that he joined the industry for the music more than the money. This master of all trades, jack of none invests all his energy and focus on his productions and it’s all paying off! Diplo has established himself as an artist of quality and quantity and has a potpourri of surprises in store for us. We can only wait and watch what this DJ has in store!
