With accidents and deaths at EDM festivals and events skyrocketing, one can only wonder what’s in store for us as attendees to be assured safety. From a crushed security guard at Ultra, Miami to deaths at Electric Zoo and Electronic Daisy Carnival respectively, we can only expect crucial changes to be made in matters of security.
Here comes in Boston Calling Festival, a local music festival that has introduced on Boston Police’s calling a facial recognition technology to keep attendees in check. Developed by IBM, the technology sounds like a considerably intrusive way to watch the plethora of attendees’ activities at any fest and identify any conspicuous behavior. But it makes us squirm to imagine someone watching us all the time. Sounds a lot like Orwell’s 1984 doesn’t it? This seems to be an justified step by Boston police who feel this would be a good way to avoid a recap of the horrific Boston Marathon bombings but it makes us wonder about how free we are to do as we please. Whether it is for our benefit or not will only be answered by its implementation this year. We still hope that this monitoring system is not the answer to us raver’s problems worldwide.
