Calling this song EDM would be a gross misconception, because it is as pop as pop can get. As Zedd slips down the rabbit hole into a less than magical land called mediocrity with this track, one can’t help but wonder how far the “Shave It Up!” hit maker, club thumper, all round musical genius will fall. If you’re a true Zedd fan, I implore you, do not listen to his latest song with Ariana Grande. Or rather Ariana Grande’s new song, with Zedd floating somewhere in the background. This teeny bopper song is perfect for those sleepovers you have when you’re in your pre – teens, talking about how rude boys are while painting each others nails. Generic beats and a super soft drop; the fairly straightforward equation for simple EDM, the song will soar to the top of Pop charts, but I sincerely hope I don’t see it anywhere on the Electronic/Dance charts. Talking to Billboard, Ariana Grande called the experience of working with Grammy winner Zedd “super experimental”; and I put those words in inverted commas because the song is anything but. “Break Free” may be Grande’s expression of leaving an old relationship behind, but for Zedd, all he’s doing is ‘breaking free’ of the very ingenuity that defined his career before.
