There are a few artists who continually impress you from time to time. Every tune is appreciated, and is a true representation of unassailable talent, and what they stand for. One such artist is a mainstay of UK’s drum & bass scene, none other than Sub Focus. Bursting into the scene around 7-8 years ago, his discography is a beautiful combination of pure liquid drum & bass sprinkled with pop vibes here & there, with fantastic vocal collaborations. With his latest album Torus being dropped, hit past the break to check out what we think!
Wherever you are, at a club, in your car or at home, it doesn’t matter. The tunes from this album are pure gold, and they seamlessly settle into your mindset, a mean feat for any artist. Sub Focus has managed to set up an illustrious mental soundscape garnering worldwide attention that’s bound to get universal. A multitude of emotions flow in each track, and Sub Focus’ able and calculated brushstrokes paint a pretty picture, alright.
Here are our top 5 #bangin tracks from this album:
Tidal Wave ft Alpines
No doubt, this has got to be one of our favourites of this album. A celestial track, to say the least, Alpines has synced her vocals masterfully with Sub Focus’ mid tempo drum & bass sounds. An uplifting melody coupled with pitch perfect bass vibrations has got me abusing the repeat button on this one. There’s just something about this track that stays with you.
Turn It Around ft Kele
Another radio hit for certain, when premiered on BBC Radio 1, it was love at first listen, without a doubt. Kele contributes fantastically, and Sub Focus combines a variety of synths to produce Turn It Around, a track that’s bound to be appreciated world over, by producers and fans alike. With a sound that warms you till your very core, these simple sounds hold together the constantly growing riffs and drops.
Endorphins ft Alex Clare
Enough and more has been praised about this tune already, and I personally love the fact that Sub Focus has enlisted another bottomless pool of talent in the form of Alex Clare to work on Endorphins. Some of the finest kick drums I’ve heard, Alex Clare does not disappoint and if it caught Tommy Trash’s attention to remix it, then we’re quite stoked for this one!
Until The End ft Foxes
Sub Focus has repeatedly rotated vocalists to feature in his tunes, and we’re nothing short of appreciative as it keeps things fresh. Already enjoying the fruits from featuring on Clarity, Southampton-born Louise Allen or better known by her stage name Foxes lends her vocals to a soft, haunting track with a very melancholy feel. With greater focus on the vocals the melodies, it makes for a welcome change.
Torus
The title track, as well as the first track off the album, this is a breathtaking dance number that will shock you for the sole reason that its sounds veer towards the genre of moombah. But, we’re soon taken to space because this song will have its listeners orbiting around and steadily but gradually doused into the pleasurable black hole of drum & bass.
To sum it up, this album is a self-discovering journey in space, and Sub Focus is your Commander. One seldom looks beyond the tunes that all sound alike, but this man’s musicality knows no bounds, and Torus is nothing short of a revelation. One of the most creative dance acts in the UK, each song has a multitude of layers, just waiting to be dissected. Artistic prowess at its finest, Torus is nothing short of musical panache. Grab the regular 13 track version of the deluxe 17 track version via iTunes. We highly recommend the latter, though!
