Gig Review: Cedric Gervais at Royalty, Mumbai

The man who recently made one of the most beautiful women, Lana Del Rey’s track come alive in a whole new way made his way to Indian shores & the crowd was waiting with baited breath. If you still haven’t been able to make out, we’re talking about none other than the French charmer, Cedric Grevias’s tour of India.

The power house DJ born in Marseilles, moved to Miami, at a tender age of fifteen. He left everything behind, a comfortable home, a charming atmosphere to prove to the world that he had arrived. He secured residencies at the best clubs and parties Miami had to offer – Living Room, Nikki Beach, Crobar and Space. His first big break came in the form of ‘Spirit of my Life’ in 2006 which Pete Tong went on to make the ‘Essential New Tune’ on his BBC Radio 1 show. Cedric followed this with a string of high profile remixes for the likes of Dubfire and more ‘Essential New Tunes’ – namely in the form of 2009’s ‘Mauri’s Dream’ and most recently his smash hit ‘Molly’, of which even Madonna is a fan.

Finally he had truly arrived and there was no stopping him and the whole world has surely now seen what he is capable of. With his killer releases and massive collaborations he has created a defining name for himself in the dance music industry globally.

Coming to his tour of India, the tour was slated to take place in Mumbai and New Delhi. The gig in Mumbai took place at Royalty, which is a major hub for dance music gigs in the city.

Aditya Warwani got the crowd warmed up with some groovy tunes including Eve – Blow your mind, which got a loud cheer from the crowd.  The young DJ turned up the tempo to just the right amount in order to ensure that the stage was set for the massacre which was to come later in the night.

Finally at about half past midnight the man who everyone was waiting to see, Cedric Gervais himself finally took to the stage with some heavy progressive numbers.  His set was exceptional & the track selection was unique. In the beginning of the set itself he dropped the chartbuster, ‘Molly’ and the crowd let loose like there was no tomorrow.

He also got jiggy with Icona pop’s “I love it” and the energy in the crowd was palpable as the crowd danced on, some even getting together and flashing lights with their phones and other accessories which you most often see at a dance music gig.  As the tempo built and the energy peaked on the scale within the crowd he churned out Daddy’s Groove’s explosive track, ”Unbelievable”. He also played a Sultan and Ned Shepard’s remix of Bruno Mars’s track, “Locked Out Of Heaven”.

Hard Rock Sofa’s tailor made dance floor favourite, “Rasputin” made its way through the console next, smoothly and stealthily. Cedric then went on to play one of his most appreciated tracks, his remix of Lana Del Rey’s, “Summertime Sadness” and it was as though an invisible hand had suddenly waved over the emphatic crowd and slowed their steps and quietened them only long enough to get them raging once again, only this time it was harder.

The night moved on and the crowd raged on, with some incredible tracks like Alesso’s ‘Raise your head’ and Cedric’s own collaboration with Borgore ‘Deception’. Although Cedric himself was very composed and poised on stage he sure knew how to push the right buttons of the eclectic bunch that were present there to see him live.

The impression that the Frenchman left behind after the gig is remarkable, personally to me because, while a regular DJ is kicked to make his fans dance their hearts out, Cedric came across as one who give a sentimental feel to every track and ensure you walk away from his gig remembering all those wonderful tracks that not only made you dance and rage but also awaken a part of your soul that was long since dormant.
