NYTimes: “The New Pop Stars” Featuring Tiësto!

The New York Times recently got face-to-face (No really, they’re proximity is really close in the video!) with Dutch superstar, Tiësto, to help them better develop their understandings of how things work in the EDM scene. The interviewer sits down with Tiësto to understand his opinions on production, salaries of DJ’s and whether they actually deserve it.

Tiësto is quoted as saying that “everybody who is 14-years old and has a laptop can get the program”, referring to electronic music production and how it’s ease has opened up the entry-field for new and upcoming producers.

Tiësto also compares the relativity of talent. He explains that while people may criticize him for pushing buttons, him pushing buttons and someone playing the guitar for 10 years share the same sentiment, it’s a no-brainer for the user. He uses the example to compare himself to Pink Floyd bassist, Roger Waters.

The video goes on to explain DJ’s and their tied-up brands, such as, Avicii & Ralph Lauren; Tiësto & Guess; and David Guetta & Renault. The interviewer also goes on to ask a slightly controversial and direct question, asking Tiësto if he deserves to be paid like this. You can check out Tiësto’s answer to those questions and others in the video.
