Skrillex – Leaving EP

Skrillex has uploaded a new 3 song EP, “Leaving” to his YouTube account. The surprise EP which has come out without any prior notice to fans was also made available via The Nest, Skrillex’s $12-monthly membership service on Drip.fm, but it seems the musician wanted his fans to have an even easier time getting to the new material.

In a statement on The Nest Skrillex said, “This is not about changing the music industry now, It’s about supporting great and forward thinking tools like drip.fm to connect us on a more personal level. The fact that we have a direct way to give you guys content without any of the red tape that the normal distribution mediums have makes it really easy fun for us and gives us a new platform to be creative and spontaneous.”

As for what’s on the EP, the Leaving EP sees the DJ Mag #10, Sonny Moore dipping his fingers into unorthodox music distribution channels. It contains “Scary Bolly Dub,” a song that’s been part of his DJ sets for some time, along with two new tracks that recently recorded on the road, according to Rolling Stone.

We at Bangin Beats further give you a track by track breakdown of the 3-track EP!

Up first the title track, “Leaving” is a downtempo song that was recorded in a Mexico City hotel room, and its ambient nature might have some people wondering where, exactly, the drop in the track lies. Could its muted tone, not to mention its title, mean that he’s written his post-Ellie Goulding-split dubstep breakup song? To this Sonny says, “I guess it’s just kind of a reflection of how I’m feeling right now,” he said of his new material.

Up next, “Scary Bolly Dub” has a nice bounce that makes for the introduction of the infectious melody (and a screech saying “Yes, oh my gosh!”) from “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” even more surprising.

Rounding up the EP is “The Reason”, the vocals for which were apparently finished an hour before Skrillex let the EP loose on the Internet and are clipped and stretched in a way that evokes the sadness which is proclaimed in “Leaving,” although they’re laid over a squelchy beat with more muscle than the title track.

All in all the EP is surely a great surprise new year gift for fans of Sonny across the planet and makes for some great listening from the man who has become synonymous with producing some great music over the last couple of years and generating a superb fan following. Keep surprises like these coming Sonny!
