The DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll: the chart everybody loves – or loves to hate, depending on who you ask.

Some call it controversial but theres no discounting that the DJ Mag annual polls for the top 100 DJ’s are referred to, viewed and criticised by almost all of us every year. The 2012 poll’s results are set to be released this month and we decided to give you a low down about the infamous polls, their history and more.

To begin with, DJ Mag is a British monthly magazine dedicated to Electronic dance music (EDM) and DJs. Founded January 31, 1991, the magazine is translated monthly to Portuguese, Polish, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Chinese, Bulgarian, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

The magazine publishes two annual “top 100″ lists, one for DJs and one for nightclubs. From 2010 onwards both polls were based on a public vote.

The awards party for the poll was traditionally hosted at the majestic Ministry of Sound in London but for the 2011 poll, the event was hosted outside of the UK for the first time in its history, being staged at the 2011′s edition of the Amsterdam dance event. The 2012 award show will also be held at October 19th at the same event as per information online.

Now, most of us have casted our votes and are eager to see our favourite DJ take this years coveted numero uno’s spot but in turn this prestigious spot is also the much wanted icing on the cake for DJ’s worldwide too. DJ’s worldwide aim at joining the ranks of those DJ’s who’ve claimed the number 1 spot on the list for the respect and recognition which it carries.

Previous winners of the top 100 DJ polls are:

  • 1997 – Carl Cox
  • 1998 – Paul Oakenfold
  • 1999 – Paul Oakenfold
  • 2000 – Sasha
  • 2001 – John Digweed
  • 2002 – Tiësto
  • 2003 – Tiësto
  • 2004 – Tiësto
  • 2005 – Paul van Dyk
  • 2006 – Paul van Dyk
  • 2007 – Armin van Buuren
  • 2008 – Armin van Buuren
  • 2009 – Armin van Buuren
  • 2010 – Armin van Buuren
  • 2011 – David Guetta

Now, whichever side of the line you fall, we can all agree that the sanctity of the magazine’s polling mechanism is of the utmost importance. Without that, supporters will no longer have an honest index of the finest DJs on the planet, and detractors will no longer have legitimate cause to decry the tastes of the great clubbing unwashed.

It may come as a shock, then, that every year dozens of DJs attempt to game the system, and thousands of “illegal” votes are discounted. But this is what DJ Mag said in an announcement made earlier in the year. “Underhand activity has apparently been as rife as ever this year, and the magazine has decided to take action and evict one DJ from the poll – Switzerland’s Miss Diamond – with further disqualifications apparently in the pipeline”.

DJ Mag’s Managing Director, Martin Carvell, said: “This year, DJ Mag has discovered ‘blatant’ cheating and several high-profile DJs are currently under investigation. Our methods of analysis are sophisticated but time consuming, and DJ Mag has to be absolutely sure that illegal methods have been used to acquire votes before evicting DJs from the poll.”

He had added, “As of today (3rd August 2012) DJ Mag are eliminating Miss Diamond from Switzerland from the Top 100 DJs Poll. Based upon our analysis, it is quite clear that Miss Diamond, or those working on her behalf, have cheated. We will be notifying her forthwith. Others will follow over the coming weeks.”

Miss Diamond who was disqualified for cheating

Certainly this has reinstated my faith reasonably in the polls and I am now eagerly awaiting the results!

Wishing all the DJ’s the best for the results. Cheers!
