HomeGig AlertGig Alert: Red Bull Presents Sandunes ‘Hand Of Thought’ Rajrishi Murthi October 9, 2019 Gig Alert Mumbai-based producer and composer, Sandunes has announced her return to the piano with a new collaborative show, ‘Hand of Thought’. Slated to take place on October 20 at Liberty Cinema, Mumbai, the forthcoming show incubated and presented by Red Bull India – will feature Sanaya Ardeshir on piano and electronics, accompanied by instrumentalists Shirish Malhotra, Rhys Sebastian, and renowned arranger Neil Waters as the orchestrator. Sandunes’ latest body of new material, shortly after the release of her latest EP, 11:11, is yet another chapter in her evolution as an artist, and a continuation of new experiments in minimalist compositional techniques. ‘Hand of Thought‘ – inspired by the incisive classic, ‘Opening the Hand of Thought: Foundations of Zen Buddhist Practice’ by Kosho Uchiyama has been over a year and a half in the making, ever since Sandunes first recorded a performance at the Red Bull Music Studios in Berlin. Drawing on influences such as the minimalist compositions of Steve Reich and Carl Stone, Hand of Thought explores the intimacy afforded by the piano, and new experiments in instrumental orchestrations. “In 2017 – when I was in Berlin as part of the Border Movement Residency – I had an opportunity to develop music on a piano again (after some years of not having access to one, and many years of using my laptop as my start point),” Sanaya says of when the seeds of the project were sown. “I began developing piano-compositions – minimal, repetitive, generative, and that’s when the first pieces of Hand of Thought came into being,” she adds. The following year, in search for pianos in homes and in spaces where micing, looping and experimenting may have been possible, Sanaya wound up at a friend’s house in Berlin using their Steinway grand to further develop the sketches. “Barring performances at Reproduce in Mumbai, Sofar Sounds, and Homegrown’s Memory Project, most of this music has been developed in Berlin. It’s been incredible and I’m grateful to have had pockets of support in the form of resources, pianos, studio time at Red Bull Music Studio in Berlin, and most importantly, trust in my idea of merging this minimal-piano music with my world of production and collaboration.” Check out the announcement below.
