HomeArtist Of The MonthArtist Of The Month – RΞZZ (January 2018) Pranav Gupta January 4, 2018 Artist Of The Month, FeaturedBox 2017 was an incredible year for dance music, with a number of artists breaking through the “up and coming” barrier and making the year theirs. One artist who managed to capture the attention of the whole of electronic music was Isabelle Rezazadeh aka Rezz, who with her own brand of industrial techno spun some heads with her debut LP, ‘Mass Manipulation‘. With 2018 having just started, the future looks bright for the 22 year old Canadian DJ/producer, who is our choice for Artist of the Month for January, 2018. Born in Ukraine, Isabelle moved to Canada at an early age with her parents, where she grew up as a fairly average teenager interested in sports and hanging out with friends. However, all of that changed when she saw Tiësto performing at the Athens Olympic opening ceremony in 2004, and an Afrojack festival DJ set, both on YouTube. Citing electronic music’s crisp sounds as a major reason for her connect with the genre, she later saw her future mentor and label boss deadmau5 at HARD Day of the Dead in Los Angeles, who she credits to changing her outlook on music production. Taking to DJing at the age of 16, Rezz started producing her own music, taking inspiration from Deadmau5, and it was only after producing for 3 years that she was noticed by Skrillex in 2015, who reached out to her via Twitter, leading to her debut release, ‘Insurrection‘ on NEST. Later the same year, her track ‘Serenity‘ was released on mau5trap’s ‘We Are Friends, Vol. 4‘ compilation, pretty much cementing her position as one of the most exciting artists to look out for in the vast dance music scene. Continuing her meteoric rise, Rezz’s EP, ‘The Silence Is Deafening‘ was released on mau5trap in 2016, followed by her sophomore EP, ‘Something’s Wrong Here‘, and debut album ‘Mass Manipulation‘ last year. Her sound has constantly drawn comparisons to greats such as Gesaffelestein and Trent Reznor, and while she still has a long way to go achieve the iconic status the two artists enjoy, we certainly wouldn’t be surprised once she reaches new levels of brilliance with her music. Her live sets are a joy in themselves, as the 22 year old dons a pair of oversized electronic goggles as part of her persona on stage, while throwing down a melange of bass heavy dark and sinister cuts in sync with some mind bending visuals. Her recent world tour in support of her album saw her play across several cities across the world, including Delhi and Mumbai in September last year, while also having played some of the biggest festivals, including Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland and many more, as well as having being announced on the lineup for Coachella 2018. Rezz is the perfect representative of an army of new age electronic music artists who are moving beyond the conventional sounds in the genre to create something of a new movement, and with her best years ahead of her, the future of dance music seems to be in safe hands.
