Martin Garrix was meant to rule the dance music industry, and that’s what he has been doing ever since he broke onto the scene with his certified hit, “Animals“. The 20-year old Dutch prodigy who was recently crowned #1 on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Polls and even bagged two awards at this year’s MTV EMAs is all set to land in India later this week for a massive 4-city tour with Sunburn Festival.

And in anticipation of his highly awaited return to the sub-continent, the young gun chatted with Times Of India to talk about his latest achievement to be ranked #1, being part of the dance music documentary, ‘What We Started‘ alongside Carl Cox and much more!

When asked about whether he is concerned about following trends, he shared his thoughts saying how he wants to make music he likes and even wishes to become a household name in pop music:

“I think what makes a great DJ is a DJ that doesn’t follow trends. If you or your sound can become a trend, that’s when you know that you did it right. I want to make music that I like and don’t focus on trends while I’m in the studio working on new tracks. Experimental, deep house is the way I want to go! I want to produce more number one hits but not follow trends blindly! What I really hope to achieve in the long-term is to get that cross-over status such as Calvin Harris and Avicii. I’d love to be a household name in pop music.”

Moreover, he also talked about his feature on the latest dance music documentary, “What We Started” which features heavyweights such as Carl Cox, Steve Angello and more. Martin was also vocal about the respect and love he has for UK veteran saying:

“He is such a legend and has been doing this for 30 years, which is something I really look up to. I admire and respect Carl, he has so much positive energy. I’m very humbled and excited to be a part of this project! He is an amazing guy who has been in the scene for a long time. I remember listening to his music when I was younger, so to be featured in this next to him is amazing.”
