One of Mau5trap‘s latest signings, the Canadian DJ and producer, Rezz has been a rising name in 2016. In her self-described “weird” sound, her music includes her own take on dark techno, bass music and downtempo bangers. With her astounding live sets and quality productions, she has earned herself a massive following in a short time. After her debut Silence Is Deafening EP on Mau5trap, she is here with her sophomore EP, Something Wrong Here.
The first track on the EP, ‘Purple Gusher‘ starts off with a strange arpeggio soon backed by a dark synth. Slowly building a horror atmosphere, this down tempo track drops with intensifying, gritty bass. The vocal chant adds another layer of horror to the track. The second on the EP, ‘Selector‘ enters with a looping sound building up to become a synth sound itself. After a dark intro of string-esque sounds, the drums take over along with a gritty, dark bass following through the beats.
Next up, ‘Melancholy‘ features high vocals of Laura Brehm, who has delivered some stunning vocals in the past and this one marks no exception. Slowly progressing bassline backs the track while plucky lead takes the foreground in the mix. ‘Selector’ portrays Rezz’s excellent use of acoustic sounds on the breaks and builds up a perfect dark atmosphere.
The horror story continues with Cryptic‘s winding buildup and analog-ish drop synths. This bass heavy track will easily make you feel like an alien invasion with its weird synths. ‘Voice In The Wall‘comes in as a floating UFO and unleashes a tingling arpeggio before the drop takes over with hard-hitting Dubstep beats and high-velocity bass. The same arpeggio drives the track through some weird sounds which will give you the creeps and make you move at the same time.
The closing piece on the EP, ‘Paranoid‘ is more like R2-D2 talking in different sounds. The simple yet effective melody takes the lead throughout the track and dark bass sounds complement it on the places. This dark track rests after a peak of horror vibes!
The amazing thing about this EP is that every track is different in itself and does not follow one formula of any genre. The tracks will catch you off guard and the misc sounds will make you run away to the rhythm.
