Su Real – Twerkistan [Album Review]

Delhi’s very own hip-hop and bass music icon Su Real is here with his much-awaited album, Twerkistan. A perfectly “Bangin” collection of 16 tracks features English and Hindi vocals by some of the most talented artists from the country. The album fuses international bass and hip hop influences with desi touch and delivers some of the most ‘twerky’ music out there!

The title track Twerkistan is an instant spellbinder with its infectious hook. Booming hip-hop beats are mashed with luscious vocals by Tanya Nambiar. Su Real himself raps on the track, making it the official anthem of the land of TwerkistanGeneral Zooz from Reggae Rajahs delivers a premium dancehall touch to the second track ‘Soldiers‘ while Tanya Nambiar again sings on the verses. ‘Soldiers‘ infuses a desi melody with driving buildups and hard hitting drops of Dubstep.

East West Rude Boy Mash Up Ting” plays with a desi flute melody with some slayer of tribal house influences and trap drops! The track also features some clever sampling to get the track more interesting and groovy. The desi feel throughout the breakdowns and drops is amazing! ‘Fitness Pump’ samples the intro from those Hindi fitness products ads you see on TV. The infectious Shehnai melody will get you hooked instantly while P-Man (Shaa’ir n Funk, ViceVersa) spices things up with his rap. Booming 808s and crazy beats are just irresistible to move your body to.

Jhook Gyal’ features Karma, Delhi’s veteran DJ and pioneer of Hip Hop parties in Delhi, who delivers a stunning Hinglish rap. With some dirty brass and intriguing synth sounds, Jhook Gyal drops some serious bass! ‘Turban Shake’ experiments with Bhangra and midtempo dance. While you can hear that Punjabi Dhol beats on the breaks, the drop goes all out with heavy vibrating synths. The track features Malaysia-based Ravinderjit Singh from Diplomats of Drum on percussion, who has undoubtedly done a great job at adding some extra Punjabi feels to the bass-heavy production.’Turn Up’ is a result of collaboration with India’s upcoming bass music talent, Ritviz. Bouncy synths and bass-heavy trap drops are taking the energy off the roof!

Thuggee‘ again features Karma on the rap duties while the street and Gangsta vibes take over. With “Axomic Bounce” and “Sufi Salute“, we’re halfway through the album and things start to get more interesting. With some great sampling, these tracks take shape towards mid-way breakdown vibes. Desi touch on the strings is setting a mellow mood while the screeching synths counter those vibes! Sufi Salute takes things up a notch with a throbbing drop which will surely make you go nuts!

Dum‘ builds things up again from a little break and features desi vocals and folk sounds moulded with funky beats. ‘Kabaddi‘ and ‘Daku‘ give a taste of Su Real‘s absolute trap vibes at its best! While Daku’s percussion will surely get you grooving, the sampling on both of the tracks is adding a new flavour! ‘Pakis in Paris’ in Su Real‘s own words is a “tongue-in-cheek subcontinental ode to Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s ‘Niggas In Paris‘ which speaks for itself. With a similar hook, the rap by Charles Dickenson takes off. Indian percussion is also one of the things that will get you dancing to this desi version of Niggas In Paris.

Pagal‘ is a collab with another upcoming bass artist Mr. Doss. This powerful trap tune builds up over a catchy melody and drops some dirty vibes with a bouncy lead. The album closer ‘Rave Bust’ addresses the adversity and suppression by the authorities against the dance music scene of India and how the media asserts things without any prior investigation, a perfect example of people’s poor mindset of raves being something illegal and bad.

To round it up, Twerkistan is total fire spiced up with desi touch. Kudos to Su Real for a start-to-finish ride full of bass and fun! Check it out and grab your copy on iTunes because this album is an absolute steal for 100 bucks!
