Interview With UNER!

uner-2015-960

One of the finest names in dance music to have come out of Spain, UNER has consistently delivered throughout the years. With releases on labels such as Diynamic, Cadenza, Get Physical among others, as well as receiving support from veterans such as Carl Cox, Luciano or Laurent Garnier, the Spaniard has created quite the niche for himself in the global techno scene today.

We managed to catch up with UNER before his India tour to discuss his Ibiza residencies, his upcoming music and much more. Read on:

TBB: You’re returning to India for the second time after your tour in December last year. Feels good to be back?

UNER: Actually I’m very happy to be coming back. My first time in India was a very positive experience both artistically and personally. It was an amazing tour full of wonderful people and lots and new inspirational moments for me.

TBB: We know that you played in a live band while growing up. What made you get into electronic music?

UNER: Yes, I’ve been doing live sets with electronic bands from a young age. The first band (well, it wasn’t really a band, it was a duo) was called Real Dream and we used to do electronic pop from that era (around about 1994/1995). It sounds a bit cheesy now, but we were 16 years old and our dream was just to be able to play live to people.

After my classical music start and then the band, I was always linked to electronic music one way or another. All the music that my dad brought me back from his trips inspired me a lot, especially the electronic music and it was when I discovered Jarre that I took the step to devote myself to this music.

TBB: If you had to execute a few dream collaborations, with whom would they be?

UNER: Jean Michel Jarre: I’m doing electronic music thanks to his “Magnetic Fields”, the first album I had thanks to my father. So it would be a kind of tribute to my father and everything he taught me.

TBB: You journey so far has been absolutely phenomenal. What has been the most rewarding part of your successful career?

UNER: Actually, the most important success in my career was a personal success, just at the time that I realized I had to do what I really felt was right for me, without focusing on what other artists do, without thinking about success in itself, but to achieve personal goals and especially in a mental and spiritual way, to always be closer to the music. That moment for me was the ‘birth’ of UNER and so on…

TBB: Your live show concept is a one of a kind spectacle. What is the kind of experience that you aim to deliver with the entire show?

UNER: I was working on a live show a while ago, totally focused on the instrumentalization aspect. But after several tours I decided to sop the live show and focus on the DJ set while thinking on how I can develop my live show and what the next steps will be to ensure it’s a success. Its important to so it right, and at the right time.

For now, I ‘m working on two different concepts: one with a live band , a project which has taken a year and a half so far, and the other is a live project with a very classical style mixed with electronic music. Something you can see in a while, if all goes well!

TBB: You recently had the chance to be a part of Carl Cox’s The Final Chapter show at Space Ibiza. How was the experience of being part of something so legendary?

UNER: Yes this was one of the most important moments of the year for me, and all the others artists who have played with Carl this summer. It’s a very emtotional moment to know that Space will be no more after this Octobers closing party and also Carl is such a legend it was a huge honour to play The Final Chapter. A very happy memory which I will never forget!

TBB: You held 3 residencies in Ibiza this year. How exciting has this season been, as compared to the previous ones that you’ve played?

UNER: Every summer Ibiza is always a magical place to play. I have been playing there almost every week this summer at some fantastic venues. I am very thankful to have such a wonderful line up of shows on the Island at Ushuaia with ANTS and also The Blue Marlin where I also worked on their compilation earlier this year. I’ll be part of both the closing parties for each venue too, so I have a lot to look forward to still! Of course being a resident for “We Love Sundays” was very special as everyone knows that it is the last year for the club and its very emotional and special for anyone who has been lucky enough to play there.

TBB: You took over the brand new role of being a label boss last year when you debuted Solar Distance. Tell us a bit about the ethos you aim to maintain within the imprint.

UNER: The label for me is a very important platform not only to release my own music, wth my own style, but also to help other less known artist get to where they need to be in the industry. I always ask them “Where are you going with your music” This is important to understand the artists dreams and ambitions. Many talented artists find it very hard to release on larger labels, so I want to be able to bring some fresh talent to the market – there are some amazing producers out there, who just need the right platform to be able to releases their productions.

TBB: You have a new EP coming up on Culprit this month, and another release on Nic Fanciulli’s Saved Records in October. Can you tell us a little about these two upcoming releases?

UNER: Yes, I am really happy to have my first release with Culprit and being back on Saved, which is where I released my second EP as UNER back in 2009 :)

It has been a complicated process, with respect to production, during the last few months of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 since my father passed away, it cost me a lot back to find that special inspiration and that’s why I was releasing just special remixes for good friends, but after a while and a lot of love from my family and my very closed friends and of course a lot of meditation, everything is back and stronger than ever :)

TBB: What do you have lined up for your fans in 2017?

UNER: For 2017, I promise a lot of new special music and compositions, tours, and very different projects which will be new for me and my fans – I am always trying to find the right mix between music and different cultures and concepts that I love. The details for it all – they would arrive as things get going……!
