When it comes to live electronic acts in India, no one does it better than Sahej Bakshi aka Dualist Inquiry. Based in Delhi, the ‘Aftermath‘ producer has gone onto create a niche for himself in the highly prevalent electronic music scene in the country, opening for acts such as Fatboy Slim, David Guetta, Pretty Lights among others, while even playing at the recent edition of Ultra Korea.
As Sahej gets ready for the return of Budweiser MADE Stage tomorrow at Todi Mill Social, Mumbai, we caught up with him to discuss his experience playing at Ultra Korea, his plans for the near future and much more. Read ahead!
TBB: From interning at a bank to becoming one of India’s leading live electronic acts, how has the journey been so far?
Sahej Bakshi: The last five years have been the most action-packed and eventful years of my life. When I started out, I was just looking for a way to be a full-time musician, but to have been accepted and supported by a whole scene has been nothing short of a dream come true. I’m super grateful for everything that has gone right, and plan to take that momentum even further in the coming months and years.
TBB: Sahej, you recently got the opportunity to play at Ultra Korea. How was the whole experience like?
SB: It’s a very different experience being on an international festival’s lineup, as opposed to playing at an Indian festival. In India, there’s a great sense of comfort in knowing who my fans are and what they want to hear. Also, my sets in India contain a lot more new, unreleased material to keep things fresh for those who’ve been listening to my music for years. When I go play in a new country for the first time, my set is more like a ‘best of’ track selection that contains selections from all phases of my career. It’s to give my new audience a chance to ‘catch up’ with my journey as an artist. The crowd at Ultra Korea was great, and I received a very positive reaction from everyone, especially when it came to having a live instrument in the performance.
TBB: As Budweiser Made Stage makes a return, how excited are you to be a part of the concept?
SB: Budweiser Made Stage is going to be an epic opportunity for us to showcase what we’ve been working on in the studio! I’m lucky to count Madboy/Mink and Kohra as close friends, and we’re really excited to be doing this together!
TBB: It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to hear anything new from Dualist Inquiry. And as we’ve seen you live stream studio sessions lately, can the fans finally have some good news?
SB: I can’t get into details, but in short: YES I have some exciting news that I can’t wait to announce when the time is right (soon!)
TBB: And finally, how does your special collaboration with Madboy/Mink and Kohra for Made Stage’s return fall in sync with Budweiser’s ‘Music Brewed The Hard Way’ campaign?
SB: Whether you’re talking about Kohra, Madboy/Mink or myself, one thing we share in common is our dedication to our own sound. Even though we’re performing together, we will each maintain our authentic identity and bring a unique element to the table. Budweiser’s Brewed the hard way campaign falls in line with our ethos because it’s about chasing your goals while being true to oneself, and about choosing to not take the easy road, but the genuine one.
Catch Dualist Inquiry live with Kohra and Madboy/Mink at Budweiser MADE Stage at Todi Mill Social tomorrow. More details here.
