Interview With Lush & Simon!

Lush & Simon

Italy has been one of the biggest exporters of talent in the electronic music industry today. With the likes of Giorgio Moroder, Benny Benassi, Stephano Noferini, Marco Carola, Joseph Capriati, Nari & Milani and many more, the Italians have indeed made a mark for themselves in the world of dance music.

One of the acts from Italy that has really stood out over the past couple of years has been Lush & Simon. Be it their originals, collaborations, remixes or bootlegs, the Italian duo have steadily built a name for themselves with their melodic sound.

We recently caught up with the duo to discuss their upcoming music, their inspirations, their favourite tracks at the moment and much more. Read on.

TBB: You guys come from Italy, which we must say has been a melting pot for the electronic music scene for quite some time now. How do you feel the scene has evolved over the years since you two started?

L: We don’t really think the scene has evolved that significantly over the past few years since we started producing, even if you take into account the deep movement that has started emerging through EDM.

S: The real chance in the scene is coming from the ways that we consume music. Streaming is now playing a major role in the way we listen to music when before it was digital and CD sales.

TBB: Are there any specific moments in your career that you’re extremely proud of?

L: There have been so many things in our careers that we have loved and felt so lucky to do; I think the one we are most proud of has to be playing at Tomorrowland 2015. It was incredible!

TBB: With your most recent track “Wasted Love”, how did you come across Gazzo for the collaboration and how was the whole creative experience like?

S: Gazzo actually got in touch with us through his Twitter! He sent us a bunch of amazing different top-lines he had made. We listened through them and there was one that we especially loved and then it just went from there!

TBB: The production elements of ‘Wasted Love’ are very pop-oriented it seems. Was it experimental or something you guys were willing to dive into?

L: It was definitely something we were keen to dive into. We are looking for something new and fresh for our upcoming releases and I think that direction at the moment is definitely more pop orientated.

TBB: Talking about the creative process flow in the studio, how do you both go about your productions? Also, is there a particular sound that you target or do you let it progress naturally and let it come about on its own?

S: Well, when it comes to writing the tracks, we are stronger in different areas, Lush is great with the beats of the tracks thanks to his drumming, whereas I really enjoy working on the melodies.

L: But it really depends – sometimes we get inspiration from something like a loop or a riff and it just progresses from there.  We don’t have a particular process to create a track.

TBB: Which artists, according to you guys, have had a big influence on your development as artists yourselves and expanding your taste in music?

L: We admire so many artists. There are probably loads that have influenced our sound over the years, but we would say the main ones are Armin van Buuren, Eric Prydz, and lately Galantis.

TBB: Given the chance to collaborate with any one artist that you haven’t worked with before, who would you like to team up with?

L&S: Armin van Buuren for sure ! ☺

TBB: 2015 was a big year for you two between all the touring and multiple releases. What are your plans for 2016?

S: This year we really want to focus on developing the sound of out music. We want to make something very particular, musically speaking. We also are working on lots of big collaborations at the moment, which is really exciting!

L: ‘Wasted Love’ is getting released in the US on Friday 15th  April as well, so we’re excited to see the response it gets over there.

TBB: Any plans for an India tour in the not so distant future?

L: We actually quite recently toured in India. We absolutely loved it – amazing country and such amazing people.

TBB: What are your Top 3 Bangin Tracks at the moment?

L&S:

  1. Galantis – No Money
  2. Marnik & Wombat – Flying Turtles
  3. Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman & Tom Staar – Empire
