An innovator in dance music, the master of evolution, a passionate and inspirational human being, any adjectives are just not sufficient to describe dance music heavyweight Laidback Luke. Born in the Philippines and raised in Netherlands, Luke van Scheppingen aka Laidback Luke at a very young age immersed himself in learning guitar and listening hip-hop. It all started professionally for him when he met by chance Dutch DJ Dobre (from Chocolate Puma) at his high school party. Realising his connect with the vibe and energy of electronic dance music, Luke utilised basic production setup, produced his own tracks and submitted them to Dobre, which in no time minted his debut release Loud Flava, Vol. 1 in 1995 and a following Vol. 2 after which there was no looking back.
Since then his position has only nourished with the varying tides of dance music, having worked with the likes of Diplo, Example, Lil Jon, Hardwell, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta and the percussionist Nebat Drums to name a few. A rare balance is what his music has showcased time and again between chart numbers and compelling club triumphs. With his reworks or remixes catelogue ranging from Daft Punk, Green Velvet and Depeche Mode to Robin Thicke, Madonna and Mariah Carey, his contribution leaves for a permanent spot in the history of dance music.
Year 2002 saw Laidback Luke release his debut artist album “Electronic Satisfaction”, marking his shift to a more electro-house sound, while the following year strengthened his friendship with Swedish DJ and producer Steve Angello and later finally collaborating in 2006 for their release of ‘Otherwize Then’. Scheppingen’s joint association with Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Axwell for the huge 2007 hit ‘Get Dumb’ marked another highlight in his career as it remained on top of several charts for months.
A passion-filled side-project Mixmash Records turned to be a career-altering step for Laidback Luke as it played a huge role in his revamping of the music industry. Having invested in the next generation of talent, it became one of the most looked-upon record labels where new music would be discovered, nurtured and celebrated setting definitive career highlights for superstars like Avicii, Bingo Players, Knife Party, Afrojack and many more.
Apart from his recording career, Luke’s musical versatility is clearly seen through his live shows that he has been putting up with his enormous skills and expertise. His Super You&Me concept has scaled the worldwide club scene with its quality line-ups including guests like Benny Benassi, Nicky Romero, Bingoplayers, Tommy Trash, Calvin Harris, Dada Life, Afrojack, Wolfgang Gartner, Sidney Samson and John Dahlback to name a few. With fans strapping-up their super powers and dressing to impress, through Super You&Me they are carried for an adventure of a lifetime.
Luke’s side project Nouveau Yorican with wife Gina Turner has received much acclaim and unconditional fan support as well. With some initial works like ‘Boriqua’ and ‘Chuiso’, the duo set their style to modern interpretation of Latin-inspired New York house, by mixing the vibes of the past Dutch and New York underground scenes with current dancefloor sensibilities.
After having a tremendous long lasting career with rocking singles and EPs catering to the masses, Laidback Luke released his second studio album “Focus” recently in 10 years. The album unlike regular artist albums featuring an artist’s diverse experimental take on style of music, delivered more of driving and fresh dancefloor anthems. Having contributions from Benny Benassi, Yellow Claw, Trevor Guthrie, GTA, and D.O.D, it is a combination of various styles pushing him to another peak in his own unparlleled style.
