Diplo Sits Down With GQ; States You Don't Need A Label Anymore

The famous GQ magazine recently had a sit down with Diplo for a quick discussion on his early career, the Mad Decent brand and his Twitter war with Lorde & Taylor Swift amongst other things. Whilst most of the interview touches upon the media frenzy after his infamous tweets, this producer has got quite a few wise words for the up and comers looking to break into this industry.

You know, you don’t need a label anymore,” he tells GQ, “we’re better at it than they are.” The secret to success? “I think more artists, honestly, should find an investor. […] You need venture capitalists to invest in music.” According to Diplo, the industry’s gates of entry are far lower than what they used to be in the past. In today’s world, an artist only needs $100,000 to launch an album.

Diplo also believes Los Angeles is the ideal place to be producing from. “There’s so many underground parties happening, so many great young producers. […] You can make a living being a producer down there.”
