Krewella
had a rather tumultuous 2014. With collaborations with the likes of Tiesto and Gareth Emery for their albums A Town Called Paradise and Drive respectively, the year saw the dance music group touch new heights. However, the departure of Kris Trindl aka Rain Man in September saw the Yousaf sisters, Jahan and Yasmine, being subjected to vile abuse on their social media accounts. However, both Jahan and Yasmine did not let any of that affect them and like they say – The show must go on. So the sisters continued doing what they loved and are still going strong. The duo toured India with Sunburn for Sunburn Mumbai and Sunburn Noida in October, and also played at Sunburn, Goa on the day 2 of Asia’s largest music festival.
We had the chance to catch up with the duo and here’s our interview with them. Read on!

TBB: When you guys decided to form Krewella, you agreed to give up all of your careers, schooling and every other aspect of your lives to focus on your music project. What were you feeling when you took that decision?

Krewella: We were all very nervous because it was a huge risk but at the same time, really excited to try and pursue our dreams.

TBB: How would you describe the experience of working on an entire album so early in your careers?

Krewella: It’s one of the biggest goals we all had at an even younger age, so making it possible in our early 20’s was incredible. I have to say though, it was a huge learning experience and I think we can both say we’re happy we have the chance to do it again and better on the next album.

TBB: What would you say is the best festival or venue you’ve played at so far?

Krewella: There are so many! Some of the best are probably Ultra Miami, EDC Vegas, Lollapalooza, and Tomorrowland.

TBB: Are you looking forward to playing in India?

Krewella: Absolutely! We’ve already played Bombay and New Delhi and those crowds were fantastic, so we can only expect the best from Goa as well.

TBB for Yasmine: You were dared by AskMen.com to sell CDs while rapping. How was that entire experience for you?

Yasmine: I was so nervous (laughs). Jahan is normally the one who is better at acting spontaneous and being a joker. I had completely let go of my fears and inhibitions to make that happen.

TBB for Jahan: You were also dared by AskMen.com, to go on a date with a fan? How was that & would you ever do it again?

Jahan: It was one of the funniest nights of my life, though I don’t think I’d do it again.

TBB: You recently said that ‘People Still Don’t Think We Can DJ’ do you still believe that?

Krewella: I think it’s an even more broad concept; “People Still Don’t Think Women Can DJ” is more like it. I think the mindsets of people are starting to change with times, though. Keep fighting until you prove them wrong, I guess!

TBB: What tips do you have for aspiring musicians who want to follow your footsteps?

Krewella: Don’t follow trends, make trends. And be ready to spend all of your time cultivating your dream, because it doesn’t happen easily or without hard work.

TBB: Out of both of you, who’s the bully?

Krewella: Neither!

TBB: What are your current top 3 #Bangin tracks right now?

Krewella:

  • We Control the Sound – Headhunterz & W&W
  • Ragga Bomb (Skrillex & Zomboy Remix)
  • Until the Grave – Energy Syndicate
