Christian Smith is a figure that has earned a name for himself as one of the most quintessential techno artists in the world and continues to inspire younglings till today. The DJ/producer has covered a long journey in the industry, and as one can see, there is no stopping for the man just yet!

Through the years, the DJ traveled to Asia and Eastern Europe where he founded a fanbase as well. It is also because of his love for traveling that the DJ is up to beat with distinct tastes of various lands and incorporates this awareness in his productions. Reinventing his sounds time and again, Smith has always delivered fresh, exclusive music to his fans. That is probably why his gigs are one of the most anticipated ones, wherever he decides to play on the globe.

He’s also founded one of techno’s leading labels Tronic Music.

Christian Smith stopped by at the school during his 3 City tour of India. With his vast experience and knowledge of the industry spanning 2 decades, he sat down with the students of I Love Music Academy, to give them an insight into the industry and its functioning but also insights into production and its relevance in today’s day & age.

The Q & A went on for 45 minutes, where the interaction between Christian Smith & the students ranged on all topics music.
Some of the Questions asked were:
Q. What were the biggest hurdles faced while starting out with Tronic?
A. While Tronic started out as a hobby, the biggest hurdle was that it was not  organized. My plan with Tronic was that it was meant for both House and Techno music that DJs could play. I did not want to be a purist and only promote a certain style of music. That way the label was much more open as compared to others at the time.
Q. What does it take to run a successful label?
A. Well according to me the biggest and most crucial aspect of running a successful label is Passion. Over the years Tronic was able to build a loyal fan base and we do that because we have passion driving us forward.

Q. What is your view on producing albums? Tell us a little about your latest album “Stronger than paradise”?
A. – I think producing albums is very important for all artists, including myself, because such a project makes you really think out of the box. I think all of us artists should produce albums because you can do things that you were always thinking of doing and make this one big cohesive project, which is always fun.
– I did this album because a. it’s fun and b. because 2 months ago i had a baby daughter and i wanted to spend some time with my family and hopefully this album release will give me some time off from production work.
Q.What are your favorite plugins? How do you make your drum patterns sound so rich?
A. well these days there are 100’s and 1000’s of plugins available, I tend to work within the box on my laptop and I really like the Arturia plugins a lot, then there is also one which is a bit fairly obvious “The Mini Moog”. It has arguably one of the warmest emulated synth for plugins that I find and i have used the hardware version, you honestly can’t tell the difference. It is really really fat, but you also need to work a lot on it like really EQ and Compress it. Another plugin i’m really a fan off is the G Force Software “ImpOSCar”. It’s an amazing synth and has a cool built in arpeggio and i use it a lot too. In terms of effects Sound Toyz makes some really cool effects like their panner is just brilliant. For effects i’d definitely recommend Sound Toyz.
