For a music genre that defines a generation, one does not look further than Tiësto‘s career graph to see how the genre has evolved. A man who has altered and redefined his sound time and again as the expansion of his musical portfolio mirrored the extent of Dance Music. Starting and finding his place on the biggest stages of the industry as a Trance DJ, Tiësto simply defined Trance music for a generation of artists, producers and fans. So much so, that his decision to expand his musical horizon left many Trance purists heartbroken to this day. Tiësto recently sat down with DJ MAG as he opened up about the reasons for his transition, and what it’s like to be a House DJ.

If I was still be a Trance DJ today, I would be the ‘Tiësto Trance guy’ but the difference is, you’re not really being relevant. You would still have your gigs and your following…and some of the old Trance guys still have their following, but it doesn’t feel like anybody really cares.

While his remarks about Trance DJ’s may stir up controversy, he did point out how younger House music producers nowdays infuse a lot of enthusiasm in him. By still being a Trance producer, he would not be able to connect with the young brigade, in effect leaving them uninspired and disconnected from the original Trance sound.

It’s nice to be in touch with the new kids coming up, the 16 – 18 year old kids, who are producing House music, who see me as a Godfather….If I was still producing Trance music, they ld be so disconnected with that sound, I wouldn’t be an inspiration for them and vice versa.

Now, while many purists and industry pundits raise serious concerns about the overall direction of House music, one cannot suspend the enormous grip it has over a plethora of EDM fanatics. Perhaps, the presence of a genuine Electronic music pioneer such as Tiësto ensures a wider vision for House music and the direction it takes in times to come.
