The dance music industry was just recently shaken by a massive arrangement between media giant Clear Channel Communications and powerhouse SFX Entertainment. The agreement from what has been made known includes, live events, a Beatport Top 20 Countdown and, most significantly, a national DJ contest.

With over 110 million listeners per week and the biggest share of the radio market, Clear Channel seem likely to soon propel EDM to the forefront of the music industry. Already the fastest growing genre in America, EDM shall now be exposed to one of the largest markets in the world as a popular movement.

It goes without saying that, this kind of exposure will have far reaching consequences for artists and events as it’s well established that effectively marketed and talent based events can attract large audiences and of late, dance music has made a name for attracting record-breaking audiences. Coupling this with weekly charts, and artists are sure to experience a greater amount of longevity within a popular market.

As hit tracks last longer, artists will remain relevant for longer periods increasing their value. This relevance will, in turn, lead to greater numbers in attendance at large music festivals worldwide, benefiting the industry as a whole. Though many might fear that such popular interest may dilute the culture of dance music, this shift in popular opinion seems to be one which shall prove invaluable to the growth and quality of the industry in the long run.

However, all that said, the most significant aspect of this arrangement will be the effect on public opinion. EDM has for a while been targeted time and time again as a scene crippled by lack of creativity and rampant drug use by a few dance music enthusiasts, but it seems as if this opinion will shift the spotlight from drug use to the music and artists we love. It will also bring in new faces, new ideas, and sponsors in an effort to shape the future of this industry.

Only time will tell what this arrangement leads to, but this partnership bodes well for our culture, our music, and our way of life.
