Artist Of The Month – Mark Knight (December 2013)

default

Not many have the musical diversity, ingenuity and prowess as Mark Knight.  Nor are there many as gifted as he is. Having established a very well respected career in Dance Music, plus setting the foundations and spearheading one of dance music’s most recognized new-age record labels, it’s not very difficult to see why we’ve picked Mr Knight as our artist of the month for December this year. Especially since we’re going to have a special Toolroom Knights stage at Sunburn Goa this year.

The embodiment of the modern DJ, Mark Knight’s legacy already ranks him as a leading player in dance music culture’s evolution into the digital and globalised age. His high octane sets, which treble and bass their way right across the dance music spectrum, have caused dance floor carnage in every corner of the world, whilst his original productions and slick remixes make his studio skills the most in-demand and sought after in the business.

From the humble beginnings of his parent’s outdoor tool shed (hence the name “Toolroom“), Mark Knight has become one of the most successful DJs and producers on the planet, responsible for some of the biggest dance tracks of the last decade. In a career spanning almost a decade, Mark has not left the pages of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ poll since his first inclusion in 2008, been Grammy nominated and performed at the world’s most iconic music venues and festivals around the world.

In 2003 with a personal vision for a new direction in house music, Mark built his first studio and created his own record label. Toolroom Records quickly established itself as one of dance music’s flag ship brands. Fast-forward to 2013 and Toolroom celebrates its success as one of the biggest independent dance music record labels in the world, recently surpassing 3million downloads as well as smashing innumerable sales records, and scooping some of the industries biggest awards along the way. Since its launch, the Toolroom imprint has developed into an uncontrollable beast, celebrating success as the biggest selling label on Beatport and reaching the milestone of 100 releases in 2009 courtesy of Faithless.

With Toolroom Records, Mark ripped up the rule book and pioneered the arrival of an era where the role of the DJ was more than just 2 hours behind the decks on a Saturday night. Pushing new boundaries and blending the lines between DJ and producer, Mark’s consistent stream of stellar tracks set a precedent that meant DJ dinosaurs had to shape up – DJs who don’t produce their own music have become extinct! Moreover, thanks to Mark, Toolroom has become a byword for cutting edge sounds and innovation within contemporary dance music, whether through underground sublabel ‘Toolroom Trax’ or their unparalleled pursuit of new electronic music talent.

As a DJ, Mark holds international prominence, recognised the world over for his extended 7 hour sets, headlining festivals and clubs from Ultra Music Festival Miami to the Terrace at Space Ibiza. In 2006, Mark’s belief and desire to inject freshness into a stale club scene, inspired him to programme his own parties, this concept became a reality with the launch of Toolroom Knights at Ministry of Sound, London in October ’06.Continuing on from the worldwide success, 2008 saw the launch of the Toolroom Knights radio show & podcast, which currently broadcasts in over 30 countries to a growing audience of over 2million people.
2013 marked a major chapter in the history of Mark Knight’s career with a celebration of the label’s 10 years at the forefront of international dance music, appropriately titled ‘Ten’.

As a producer, Mark has built a reputation for outstanding releases, consistently topping international charts with global hits such as the fastest selling beatport record: Man With The Red Face (feat. Funkagenda), Downpipe (feat. Underworld), Beautiful World (feat. Tiesto) and Nothing Matters (feat. Skin). With a Grammy nomination for work on the Black Eyed Peas’ multi-platinum album ‘The-End’ in 2010, 3 of the biggest selling records on Beatport’s ‘Best Sellers List’ and an IDMA nomination for his globally syndicated Toolroom Knights weekly radio show. Mark’s remix of Florence & The Machine’s You’ve Got The Love, and his single Your Love are the latest additions to his heavyweight music repertoire, which have been heavily supported across the board by fellow A-List DJs, industry tastemakers and FM radio playlists around the world.

Mark Knight will be playing at Sunburn Goa 2013, and he’ll be hosting his very own Toolroom Knights stage. For more info on Sunburn Goa 2013, click here.

The track that reminds you of your childhood?
“There’s loads but one that springs to mind is a track by Andrew Gold called ‘Never Let Her Slip Away’. It reminds me of my mum, she had a Mini and it used to break down a lot. We’d go down to the seaside and we’d spend more time waiting for the AA.

What’s the cheesiest record in your collection?

“I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Michael Buble. Every home is Christmasy when you put on a bit of Michael Buble, that’s more of a compliment to that time of year than to him really. Yeah, I am partial to a bit of Michael. I love Christmas, with everyone around. Every year I say I’ll take two weeks off, but I end up being home for about eight hours.”

What’s an album that you’re currently into?

“I just bought the Bonobo album. It’s really cool. I need a bit more time with it, but I just know it’s going to be one of those ones that I’m going to grow to love. One of those ones you keep putting on. I used to buy a lot more albums, I’m a big fan of soul, especially ’80s soul music, disco and funk. I buy more singles now than ever. Albums are a time thing, to really appreciate an album you have to take time to listen to it six or seven, eight times to understand it.”

What is your all-time favourite track of all-time?

“That is a very hard one. I think Maxwell ‘Ascension’. I think if there was the epitome of a perfect record in terms of production, vocals, everything about it, it’s just absolutely spot-on. It was the first dance at our wedding and it’s one of those records that if I was to go away and have just one record to listen to, it would be that one. That’s the favourite of all-time, there’s a lot but that’s the one.”

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?

I quite like the idea of being Thor and whacking stuff with his hammer, and what a great name

Essential three suitcase tour items?

My MacBook so I can continually work, Commes des Garcons because it makes you smell nice, and Twitter – the online version of crack

Which actor would play you in a film of your life?

Maybe Barry from East Enders or Mickey Rourke. It would be a tough call to make

Best end-of-the-night tune?

U2′s ‘With Or Without You‘, a piece of Balearic magic and undoubtedly one of the best songs ever written
